Chapter 14

Blaze

The little black cat, with tail standing at military attention, padded its way across the lawn toward me. Luna’s cat. The one I expressly forbade her from keeping. It rubbed against my leg, and I moved away.

“Get lost.” I wanted to be alone to clear my thoughts after the meeting.

But it came to me again, brushing on the inside of my legs, purring. It lifted a paw, circling it in the air. Damned thing wanted a pat.

This ebony stray, wild and headstrong, reminded me of Luna. They both refused to listen to reason.

I sighed and bent to pat it, scratching the white fur under its neck. The thrum of its purr reminded me of sensations I’d encountered not long ago—feelings I’d welcome again, in spite of the risk. Shared pleasure, passion, and power. Purrs of delight, shouts even. A song of exultation between two joined bodies. A rapture I could only describe as having the Sun, the planets, and stars spinning inside of me, making me want more.

The cat twisted his head so I could scratch between his eyes.

Since being suspended from duty, I hadn’t seen her, and I ached to see her, to explain everything, but she was off limits while the Council conducted their investigation.

The lingering vestige of power we’d shared still curled and shone within me. I had no right to want what I wanted, but my feelings for Luna were unmatched by anything else I’d experienced. And she’d felt everything I did, loved it every bit as much. As forbidden as our relationship—teacher and pupil—I craved more time in her bed. To lie beside her, cradle her as she fell asleep, to whisper sweet words in her ear, talk to her until dawn, to spend more time with her.

The way I’d left it, she thought I’d used her for sex then told her we couldn’t see each other. The shame of it chimed inside me.

God. I ran a hand through my hair. I seemed to have developed a second personality: the responsible and respectful Gildron AND the reckless and lustful lover who risked everything I’d worked so hard for. Now I had to wonder which person I preferred being. Luna had put me in touch with a part of myself I’d never found with anyone else, a part who didn’t care for rules or trying to win people’s trust and respect.

Along with the forbidden nature of what we’d done, there was a second complication. Cole.

“Blaze!”

I turned to find that very complication striding out the front entrance of the Guild.

The cat meowed and ran to him.

“Cole.” I stiffened. Our relationship wasn’t exactly brotherly, and I’d just been thinking about how badly I wanted to sleep with his girlfriend again.

Cole stepped nearer and crouched to stroke the cat. “Have you seen Luna? She’s been missing all night. I think I know where’s she at, but I’m afraid if I go to Gable’s place, Venellan’s going to find out and we’ll be in deep shit.”

Gable.

Heat coursed through my veins like liquid metal—my Ifrit fire magick.
