“Don’t fucking say those words again. If you don’t believe she will make it, take it outside this room. Kaelyn is in there. She needs me, and I am not leaving her side.” Profanity is not a part of my everyday vocabulary. Hearing Hanna give up on Kaelyn ripped at my heart and mind. The rage that had brewed since the explosion flared even higher. I would let no one give up on Kaelyn or express those feelings in the sanctity of her room. Only Aidan remained and held onto hope that Kaelyn would pull through.
Hanna looked at the floor, nodding as she whispered, “I’m sorry, Nico. I should have faith.”
I fell asleep as exhaustion overwhelmed me. The possibility of losing Kaelyn and my baby drained my heart and soul of emotional energy.
Hanna shook my shoulder as the sun rose. She smiled. “Her vitals are stronger. I gave her two units of blood, and she’s perking up. You should feed, Nico. You look horrible.”
“I won’t leave her.”
“You don’t have to,” Hanna replied as she handed me a pint of O negative blood. “I have plenty. I stockpiled supplies when I learned Kaelyn was pregnant. There’s more if you need it.”
My gratitude was immense. Feeding brought renewed strength and hope. Aidan roused from sleep as I finished off the unit of blood. “How’s Kaelyn?”
“Her vitals have stabilized,” Hanna offered. “The baby’s heart rate is stronger and is within normal range. Her white blood count is down. The fever broke while you were asleep. I think the antibiotics are working.”
My hand found the slight roundness of Kaelyn’s lower abdomen. It served as a faint reminder of the life growing within her. I kissed her cheek, then her lips. “Good morning, Kaelyn.” I did not expect a response.
She moved, a slight stirring of an arm, before a soft groan came. The cold fingers warmed slightly in my hand. The stunning grey eyes opened and found my gaze. “Nico.” Her voice was hoarse and painful to hear, but she was alive.

I felt worse than a bag of fucking ugly dicks. Yes, there are ugly dicks. Don’t say you haven’t seen them. We all have. And man, are they hideous! A craving for pickles and ice cream built intensely inside me. “Can I have pickles and ice cream?”
Nico grinned at Aidan. “She’s ok! You were right Aidan!”
A cough racked my body. Then the white-hot pain in every cell of my body hit. I groaned and screwed both eyes closed. It helped some. Then I realized a sanitary napkin lay between my thighs. Icy fear filled my heart as I struggled to sit up. “I lost the baby?” Tears welled and fell as grief flowed like lava through my entrails.
Nico saved me from falling over the edge. “The baby is fine. Hanna can tell you more about what happened. He’s fine.” His finger pointed at the fetal monitor beside the bed. “You can hear the heartbeat.”
Sure enough, little whooshing sounds broadcast the baby’s heartbeat. The grief eased.
