My chest ached from the laughs that heaved in and out of me. I sat in Nix’s lap, his hand resting on my thigh, the other holding mine. Venark and Hana were on the other side of the table, Luna and Rion to my left, and Araton and Neia to my right. Anise and Drogo were dancing on the cobblestone ahead. Hya and Medica were up there too, and fuck, could Hya dance.

Cere and Stella’s lilac locks and auburn curls stood out among the crowd, making them easy to spot from so far away. Lapsus was twirling Elira nearby, Asher and Osonia were all but fucking their way across the open floor, while Emja’s eyes twinkled up at Larson when he bent her backwards in a gentle sway.

Who we were all laughing at, though, were Sanvi, Errol, Eike, and Volke.

I knew they were happy in their quad—anyone who saw them together could see that—but to watch them dance was quite a sight to behold. Sanvi and Eike seemed to be in their element, swaying gently with whomever they were embraced with in that moment.

Neither Volke nor Errol had any concept of rhythm. I could relate to that.

When they were dancing with either Sanvi and Eike, they didn’t look too bad, honestly. I supposed because they allowed one of them to take the reins. But at the moment, Sanvi and Eike were dancing. Volke and Errol were doing their best, but Errol had just fallen, Volke had tried to help him up, only to stumble into Sanvi, who lost her footing and fell onto Eike.

They really were trying, and it was sweet to watch them laugh and pick one another up.

“Never saw those two as a couple.” Luna nodded toward Elira and Lapsus, then turned to Nix. “Did you?”

He shrugged. “I can see why they’d do well together. Elira likes a sense of humor, and Lapsus has a thing for blonds.”

“You know, I’m more surprised about the two of you.” I grinned, looking between her and Rion. Rion smirked, sipping his liquor, and Luna rolled her eyes. “I thought you two were going to kill one another when you met.”

“Oh, there’s always a chance,” Luna said.

Rion laughed, grabbed the side of her neck, and kissed her cheek. “You love me too much for that.”

“Don’t flatter yourself.”

I laughed. They were a beautiful couple. Not only in their appearances, although Rion’s dark complexion next to Luna’s—which resembled snow—was quite striking.

It was their demeanors. Rion was headstrong and a bit controlling, but only within Luna’s allowance. It was very clear that Luna made many of the final decisions. But there was something in the way that he eyed her and something in the way that she glared at him that was both romantic and a tad intimidating.

Then there were Araton and Neia.

The first time they met, she held a blade to his throat. Over the last year though, since we’d had so many Fae occupying Matriaza, I’d noted the bubbles of anticipation that boiled between them.
