Jasper scrubbed a towel over his hair as he stepped out of the shower. Looked like Colin had gotten up earlier, raided the fridge, and was now passed out again in his bed. He and his brother were going to have to have a heart-to-heart soon. But right now, Colin needed sleep more than anything. He looked like shit. Shit that had been run over a few times. Besides, he wasnât going anywhere without his boots, and Jasper didnât want to let his brotherâs unwelcome arrival get between what had started up with him and Delilah.
By the time heâd tiptoed into the bedroom and pulled on some clean clothes, Colin stirred.
âHey.â Colin swung his legs over the side of the bed. âWhere are you off to looking so spruced up?â
âDinner.â
Colin ran a hand over his belly. âIâm starving. Want to pick me up something while youâre there?â
Jasper shoved an arm through his sleeve. âNot really. Are you ready to talk to Bodie?â
Colin let his head drop. âI changed my mind. Just give me my boots back, and Iâll be on my way.â
âThatâs how you want to play it?â Jasper asked. âYou show up here, a gash in your arm, and now that youâre fixed up, you want to pretend like everythingâs fine again?â
âLookââColin stood and stretched his arms over his headââI was in a jam. You helped me out, and now Iâll be on my way.â
âIâm not going to continue to protect you.â
âIs that what you call it?â Colin smirked. âNo offense, little bro, but not even you can protect me from the bogeymen Iâm involved with now.â
âIt doesnât have to be this way, you know. I can help.â
âHelp what? Iâm not going back to jail. I canât.â His gaze changed. Something dark passed through. Colin stepped into the jeans heâd shed when he crawled into Jasperâs bed the night before. âIâd rather die than go back to prison.â
âWhat if it didnât come to that? Let me talk to Bodie. Weâll figure something out.â Jasper hadnât planned on seeing his brother again. But now that he was here, how could he turn him away without trying to help?
He thought he was helping by taking the blame for Colinâs absence. Heâd rather have his parents think that he and Colin had a falling-out than break his momâs heart by telling her heâd gone to jail. He thought he was protecting everyone. But now he knew he couldnât spend his life trying to fix everything for everyone. It was impossible. And sooner or later, the lies he told, even if heâd told them with good intentions, were going to catch up to him.
âI donât think Bodieâs going to want to hear what I have to say. At least not enough to keep me from going back to jail.â Colin cocked his head. âAny chance I can bum a clean shirt off of you?â
âYeah, take what you want.â It was clear Colin wasnât going to accept his help. Maybe he could appeal to his buried sense of family.
