Chapter Nineteen

At last. The reality of driving back to his cabin with Faye in the passenger seat of his truck had been receding for hours like a mirage in the desert. But here they were, pulling away from the ranch house at about the same time they’d left it the night before.

The tension was thick as molasses just like it had been the night before. But it was the good kind of tension that made every word pulse between them like the lazy, sensual beat of a country love song.

She laughed and leaned back against the headrest. “I was so sure somebody would have filmed our kiss. But no.”

“Not even Beau.” In the glow from the dash he traced the curve of her throat, imagined kissing her there, sliding his hand up under her shirt….

“Because it would have been creepy. And they like us too much to do something creepy.”

“Yeah.” He reached for her hand, needing to touch her. “They do. They may think our plan is doomed, but we have their support no matter how it goes.” He wove his fingers through hers. So soft. Did she mind that his weren’t? “Beau took me aside and asked if I needed fresh condoms.”

“Fresh condoms?”

“He just bought some. I guess that qualifies as fresh.” He was making her smile. That little dent in her cheek was another place he wanted to kiss.

“Why does he need them? I thought they were planning to have another kid.”

“They were. He’d finally come around, believed he could handle putting Jess through it again. Then last week he learned that a baby might end up facing the wrong way, which was potentially dangerous. Now he’s back to thinking one kid is good enough.” The topic of kids hit a tender spot in his chest. He’d have to toughen up on that subject, at least for this week.

“Beau’s a good guy.”

“Yeah.”

“Your whole family is wonderful. I was an idiot to cut myself off the way I did. We need to make a pact that we’ll stay friends.”

“We don’t need a pact. I plan to be your friend for the rest of my life.” No matter what it took.

“What if they’re right and it’s really tough to end things?”

“Doesn’t matter how tough it is. I’m prepared for it to be difficult. I choose to have these few days — more like these few nights — and pay whatever price is required.” And pretend that it wasn’t killing him when she left for Missoula.

Her fingers tightened around his. “Ella had it right. Desiree knows how to raise heroes.”

“I appreciate that, but I probably need to turn the discussion around one more time. I’m willing to accept the consequences, but are you?”

“I think so.”

“Are you sure? You just said what if they’re right like you believe they’re wrong and we’ll be fine with letting go at the end of the week.”

“I like to think positive.”

“And that’s generally a good thing.” He pulled up next to her car. No puddles tonight.
