CHAPTER SEVEN

AFTER THE TRAINING SESSION, Sarah had a shower and changed her clothes before heading into town. Her hands were still a little bit numb from performing that surgical cricothyrotomy out on the snow pile.

When she got to town she couldn’t help but smile to see all the decorations going up. Hearts on the lampposts. Hearts in store windows. It was a small-town feel, like something straight from the movies, and it made her smile, even though she’d never felt so alone.

That was the thing about small towns. Everyone knew everyone. Or at least it seemed that way. Sarah was a stranger. All she knew was Luke and a couple people up at the hotel, but were they really her friends?

None of them were here with her. Really, she had no friends and it had never really bothered her before. She’d spent so many years distancing herself from her parents’ world, she’d put up a wall to keep out everyone.

It hadn’t bothered her until now. Even then she didn’t know what she wanted. She wasn’t sure that she could bring down those walls that were safe.

That were comfortable.

Sarah headed into the coffee shop that was on the corner of the main street. She was still shivering from the cold. When she entered the coffee shop, a few people stopped their conversation and looked in her direction, but only briefly. Being new in town generated some interest, but not enough for someone to come up and talk to her. And Sarah wasn’t the kind to go up and start up a conversation with a stranger either.

If they were in a hospital or her clinic, then it would be no problem. She’d be able to talk to them quite easily.

Here, not a chance.

She made her way to the counter and sat down. It was like something out of the fifties. The coffee shop was a mishmash of retro and bohemian, but as long as they served good coffee she didn’t care too much.

“What’ll you have?” the girl behind the counter asked.

“A large black coffee with a shot of espresso, please.”

“Will do.” The girl moved away and Sarah undid her jacket and glanced around at all the people chatting. She envied them a bit.

“You’re the new doctor in town, aren’t you?”

Sarah turned to see a short, blonde woman slip into the seat next to her. It shocked her. In Manhattan this would’ve never happened. People she encountered in coffee shops there were always in a rush or kept to themselves, just as she did.

“I am,” Sarah said. “I’m Dr. Ledet.”

“I know.” She grinned, her blue eyes twinkling. “I’m Dr. Esme Petersen.”

“You’re the cardio-thoracic surgeon.”

Esme nodded. “I am. Luke mentioned that there was a new doctor up at the hotel. He also mentioned that you briefly worked with Dr. Eli Draven.”

“I did. Do you know Dr. Draven?”

Esme nodded. “He trained me.”

“I’m impressed. Dr. Draven is a world-class surgeon. Wait, Dr. Petersen, weren’t you the one who inserted that chest tube into Shane Draven last summer?”

“I was,” Esme said.
