CHAPTER 16
âShow me the way to go home. Iâm tired and I wanna go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour agoââ
âJesus, Mary, and Joseph!â Taylor turned and looked at Officer Simon Heather. He cracked a smile while leaning against the side of their little patrol boat.
âWhatâs the matter?â he said.
âIs that a serious question?â she said. âHow âbout the fact that Iâve had to listen to you sing the same tune fifty times. Geez, you make working with Alan enjoyable by comparison.â
Alan looked up from the helm. âHey! At least I was nice enough to get you a fresh cup of coffee.â
âAs long as you donât make me spill it,â Taylor said.
âYouâve got nothing to worry about,â Alan said. âWeâre on a boat. Not like I can hit the brakes.â
Taylor eyed her coffee, which did not taste very good. Alan acted as though he bought it from the café or a Starbucks, when in fact he got it from a machine in the grocery store lobby. A machine which Taylor suspected hadnât been cleaned in a month.
Now that Simon was no longer singing, she could monitor the shoreline without wanting to stick an icepick through her eye. They had been patrolling the south part of the lake for a few hours now. The hardest part was checking all of the coves, which were heavily obscured by tree branches. So far, there was no sign of the missing persons.
They were nearing the now-vacant Ned Becker cabin. It had been three weeks, and still nobody knew what happened him. Last she heard, his family back in his hometown reported he was still missing. The office still got calls requesting for officers to search the woods and lake. After over two weeks of thorough searching, they found nothing. His vehicle was still parked in the driveway, the cabinâs kitchen stocked with food and beverages, and the bedroom closet filled with clothes. There was no suicide note, or any other indication that he was about to take his own lifeâother than the fact that he disappeared right after his fiancée broke up with him.
Taylor was standing on the dock, standing by while the county dredged this part of the lake. No body was found. Nedâs boat was still there, so they knew he didnât move to a different part of the lake. Nonstop searching of the surrounding woods did not produce any findings. The only oddity was some markings on the shoreline, as though a large branch had been dragged in the mud. Multiple rain showers diminished that so-called evidence. Everything else was completely normal. It was as though the guy simply disappeared.
âLooking at that place gives me the creeps,â Simon said.
âSame,â Alan said. He looked at the water. âItâs safe to assume he didnât drown in the lake. Unless someone tied a ball and chain to him, his bloated corpse wouldâve floated up at some point. Ugh, can you imagine if he is still down there somewhere? His meat would be all soupy, almost like Jell-O.
