Wind, rain and snow were not the only problems that the Alaska Bush pilot had to face. There were also volcanoes which would erupt with little notice. This is the eruption of Mt. Veniaminof in March of 1944. At one time the volcano was 20,000 feet, almost as tall as Mt. McKinley before it ‘blew its top off.’ The black smoke is very dangerous to airplanes because the thick ash can clog aircraft engines.
