Chapter 11

Barry was just putting the finishing touches to dinner—meatloaf, green beans and mashed potatoes—when he heard the front door bang against the opposite wall.

“It’s my fucking dad. I just know he’s behind it!” Jimmy snarled.

“We don’t know that,” Jake said more calmly.

“He’ll have found out about Mom coming here for my birthday and…” Barry couldn’t hear any more because the men had turned into the dining room.

Barry imagined cattle rustling, cutting of fences, poisoning of livestock. He gripped the handle of the carving knife more tightly and thrust down into the meatloaf. “Fucking evil piece of work,” he muttered.

Knowing his cowboys would be hungry—when weren’t they—he poured his special recipe mustard sauce into a jug and set it on the tray with the rest of the food.

Carrying the tray into the dining room, Barry’s eyes immediately sought out Jimmy. He didn’t think he’d ever seen the cowboy so angry. Jake was still doing his best to try and talk Jimmy down, but Barry could tell he, too, was pretty steamed.

As they ate, the other hands saying little, Barry learned that Wayne had gone to collect their order from the feed store in town and was told their line of credit had been cut off.

“Why would they do that?” Barry asked.

“Because of my fucking bigoted asshole of a father!” Jimmy said, slamming his fist on the table.

“I don’t understand,” Barry said.

Jake explained that the feed store was under new management and most ranchers had had their accounts automatically transferred over. “But we think Jimmy’s dad persuaded the new owners, who apparently are ‘good Christian God-fearing folk,’ to not sell to, how did they put it, Wayne?”

“Degenerate sinners,” Wayne said, managing to look both embarrassed and upset.

“Oh,” Barry said, wishing now he hadn’t asked.

Dinner continued, but the men were much quieter than usual.

“This is great meatloaf,” Liam said a short while later, no doubt in an effort to break the uncomfortable silence.

“Thank you,” Barry said, pleased that someone had noticed. “It’s a new recipe I’m trying out.” He smiled. “Of course, I had to add my own special English ingredient.”

Previously Barry had joked with the cowboys that it was his mission to convert them to good old traditional English fare such as steak and kidney pie, braised liver, and tripe and onions.

Wayne and Liam stared at him, their forks motionless. Rory looked down at his plate while Jimmy and Jake seemed to be in their own worlds.

“Yeah, Worcestershire sauce. It gives that little extra kick.”

Rory cracked a smile while Liam and Wayne’s forks resumed their mouthward journeys. Jimmy and Jake hadn’t noticed and continued to eat mechanically.

“Is this a mustard sauce?” Rory asked.

“Yes, but it doesn’t taste like it, does it?”

“Uh, no,” Rory replied, “But it’s really good.” He added, no doubt thinking he’d offended Barry.

“Thank you. And that’s the idea. Some people don’t like mustard sauce.” Actually Barry imagined his cowboys would eat anything so long as it wasn’t organ meat. “I used Jack Daniels honey mustard.”

“Tastes smoky,” Liam observed.

“Liquid smoke,” Barry said, feeling out of sorts because his two lovers were upset and not talking.
