CHAPTER 20

JESSE

I recognized her mom’s truck. It had been in the driveway when I had stopped by to see her before I left for California. It had taken everything I had to get there for the appointment, and my phone had died at some point, leaving me with no way to tell her. Once I had landed in Dallas, I had been able to buy a charger, but I had a good feeling that wasn’t going to be a good-enough excuse for her.

I’m really bad at this.

It was frustrating to be so bad at relationships, and I wished more than anything that my mom was still around to help me out with this sort of thing. She would be able to tell me what I should be doing. I didn’t feel great going to my dad to talk about it—he hadn’t taken the pregnancy information too well anyway. But I would deal with that later.

“Hey!” I called out, heading toward the two of them getting out of the truck. Susie looked as beautiful as ever—though, I had to admit, she looked more exhausted than ever. So did her mom.

Guilt slammed me in the chest, knowing that I should’ve been more communicative about my arrival. I felt sick about that now, but there was nothing I could do about it other than apologize.

“I had no idea you were coming today,” Susie greeted me, though her voice sounded less like a greeting and more like a scolding.

“Yeah, I caught a last-minute flight super late last night. I wasn’t supposed to leave, but I did anyway,” I said, hoping that it would sway her a little more in my direction. In truth, I had called Sergeant Michaels and left a quick voice mail when he didn’t answer—not even bothering to answer when he called me. I was going to be turning around and flying right back. Besides, I wasn’t the one who did anything wrong, so being told to hang around seemed stupid.

“Well, I’m glad you made it,” Susie’s mom said to me, giving me a genuine smile. “Susie has been worried about it.”

“I’m really sorry.” I turned to Susie, guilt hanging heavy on my shoulders. “My stupid phone died, and I forgot a charger. I bought one when I landed in Dallas, though. I tried to call you—”

“It’s fine,” she said, cutting me off, continuing to walk past me.

I deserve that, I guess.

I fell in step with her mom while Susie led us into the building. It hadn’t been the greeting that I had expected from her, but then again, who could blame her? Maybe I wasn’t holding up my end of the deal that great. My mind had just been reeling from everything happening in California, which was why I ran off and left my phone charger. I was just trying to get here.

“I’m Carmen Wiley,” her mom said to me as we walked along. “I didn’t have a chance to introduce myself the other evening that you stopped by to see Susie.
