CHAPTER 31
âIt ainât like Miss Diane to make a mess, then walk off and leave it,â Shorty said.
âHow do we know what sheâd do?â Thad said. âUntil a few hours ago, we hadnât spoken to her much.â
âExcept for Quirt. He seems to know his way around the back room,â Bronc said.
âIf you are accusinâ me of somethinâ, you better make it clear,â Quirt fumed.
Thad grinned.
âWhat does that remind you of, Pop?â
Granddaddy patted my head, then pulled his fixings out of his shirt pocket. He rolled another quirley.
âThe time the Rockfield twins said the same words to olâ Navel-Less.â
Thad motioned to Granddaddy and he passed the tobacco fixings.
âNavel told them it would be healthier for everâone if there were six mules in the corral when he finished eatinâ his supper.â
âWas he in the Navy, Granddaddy?â I asked.
âNo, Little Brother. He didnât have a bellybutton, so he got the nickname, Navel-Less. And one of the twins said, either Albert or Alfred, âIf you are accusinâ us of somethinâ, youâd better make it clearer than that.ââ
âBut a man has to have a bellybutton,â I protested.
âOlâ Navel pulled out his revolver and laid it on the table to the right of his plate,â Thad said. âThen he yanked out his boot gun and laid it to the left.â
âEveryone has a belly button,â I complained louder.
âAdam and Eve didnât,â Shorty said.
Granddaddy ignored us both.
âWaving a steak knife as big as olâ Jim Bowieâs, Navel hollered loud enough for everâone on both sides of the Rio Grande to hear.â
âWhat do you mean, Adam and Eve didnât have belly buttons?â I insisted.
âAs I recollect,â Thad chimed in, âNavel called them horse thieves, drunkards, slackers, moral degenerates, and an embarrassment to humanity, and heâd be happy to be more specific if there was any part they didnât savvy.â
Coosie leaned back on the brown leather sofa and roared with laughter.
âOlâ Navel was about the best there was at sizinâ a man up and puttinâ him in his place.â
Shorty leaned toward granddaddy and me.
âLittle Brother, a belly-button is a scar where you used to be tethered to your mama before you were born. Adam and Eve got created direct by the Good Lord, so they didnât have no scar.â
Granddaddy lit his hand-rolled cigarette and took a slow puff.
âThe line that sticks in my mind was when Navel called them âworthless dung in the corral of life.ââ
Thad handed Granddaddyâs fixinâs back.
âOlâ Navel was begginâ for a fight, thatâs for sure.â
I yanked off my straw cowboy hat and rubbed my forehead, then glanced at Shorty.
âYou mean Navel-Less didnât have a mama?â
âI think Navel would have loved to have an excuse to âclean the corralâ, if you catch my drift,â Granddaddy said.
âOf course he had a mama, Little Brother,â Shorty reassured me.
Granddaddy took another drag on his quirley.
âOne of the twins growled, âAre we goinâ to let him talk to us like that?ââ
Shorty lowered his voice and aimed it right at me.
âNavel got injured in the Spanish War. He took a bayonet in the belly.
