There was dead silence across the inner circle of the Coven of the New Moon after Sheridan had finished speaking. She was curled up in Dylan’s arms on Alex and Lily’s back patio, where everyone had gone to relax after their ritual was complete. As Sheridan had gotten deeper and deeper into her and Selene’s speculations about Michael O’Rourke and Trom-Laighe, the witches had become more and more tense.

Lily scrubbed her hand across her face when Sheridan was done. “It never even occurred to me that Michael O’Rourke would try to take over Trom-Laighe because he’s human, and no fucking match for a demon like Cassius Deimos…especially one as powerful as Deimos appears to be. Your assessment and conclusions, though? Yours and Selene’s? It fits too perfectly to be anything else.” A flicker of lightning showed in the distance.

“Dial it back, babe.” Alex massaged her wife’s shoulders until Lily relaxed. She then scrutinized Dylan. “I’m assuming Sheridan discussed this with you before the two of you got here tonight, right?”

“She did. As much as we both hated keeping anything from you all, we decided it would probably be best to let the ritual go forward before you all had this knowledge. That way, your magick would stay unaffected.”

“I get it, fam, trust me.” Alex rubbed her forehead. “At least it explains why the deities were so adamant about us preparing for war with the Dark. I mean, it’s not like that part was a surprise, because we’ve been expecting something like that for more than a few years. Deimos wants out of Trom-Laighe, and we know he’ll do anything to make that happen.”

Hayden steepled her fingers under her chin. “But, with Stacy leaving, Sheridan becoming our new Anchor, and Emmaline and Keeley—hell, all of our Magicians—being led to fuel our coven magick until it’s reached a level it never has before, there’s been an intensity there that hasn’t seemed equal to what we already knew at that point.”

“It’s like it was overkill,” Avalon agreed and then snorted. “Overkill, my ass. I’m wondering if the first thing we need to do is ride the hedge to make sure the boundary completely surrounding Trom-Laighe is still untouched. Maybe Reese and Grace can do it since they’re two of the coven’s strongest hedge riders. That way, Grace can communicate with the spirits of place there to see if they’ve seen or heard anything unusual.” The Mavericks nodded, Reese’s arm around her wife’s shoulders.

Sam stroked her wife’s hand when Avalon was done. “I don’t know about the rest of you, but I cannot wait to meet Selene now. It only makes sense the witch who trained Sheridan would be amazing in the first place, but she is clearly a badass. I just wish she was coming down to visit under different circumstances.”

The group rumbled agreement.

Drawing a deep breath, Sheridan slowly admitted, “I also have something else. I haven’t discussed it with Dylan yet, but I wanted to talk to everybody at the same time.” She put a soothing hand on Dylan’s thigh as Dylan looked at her quizzically.
