Chapter Nine

“Prowlers are attacking Fairfall,” I announced to the others just in case they couldn’t make out what the shadowy creatures roaming the town in front of us were. None of them had encountered a Prowler before, so they hadn’t learned their scent like I had. “Let’s go.”

Willow was already shifting into her feline form, and Luxe wasn’t far behind her. Zolas withdrew his obsidian blade with an excited gleam in his eyes, and Calantha pulled out twin daggers from sheaths on her hips. Lor’s eyes flicked from me to the town with obvious concern, but I’d seen the orange-haired fairy fight against the Denvitem, so I knew she was capable of holding her own in a battle.

I flashed her an encouraging smile before I began to shift into my wolf form, and then I turned to lope down the road toward Fairfall. The shifters raced by my side a moment later, but the vampires quickly overtook us. Lor soared overhead inside the confines of her floating bubble, and I made a mental note to ask her about its properties later.

Then I turned my attention to the chaos in the streets of Fairfall, and I pushed off with my hind legs to launch myself at a Prowler climbing up the side of a building. I lost sight of the others as they all rushed toward targets of their own, but the screeches of Prowlers in pain soon drowned out the screams of the Fae folk.

I twisted the Prowler’s arm in my jaws until I could feel the shoulder joint dislocate, and then I slung the creature into the brick wall behind it. The impact caused a crack to split along the sides of his armor like a can of cat food opened with a rusted can opener. This gave me the perfect opening to shift instantaneously into my liger form, and I slashed my thick claws at the weak spot of the Prowler’s armor.

Blood and gore sprayed from the wound, and the Prowler’s armor was soon turning a burnt red that reminded me of a woman’s period. The creature gnashed and clawed at my face, but I easily dodged its movements until it gave me another opening. With another quick slash of my sharp feline claws, the Prowler’s esophagus tore in two, and it choked out a guttural death cry as it crumpled to the ground.

I didn’t wait to make sure it was fully dead before I turned to pick my next target. I saw a few of the gremlin-ape-like creatures running along the rooftops of the Fae town, so I switched to my bird form, and I was pushing into the air a moment later. I swooped down over the heads of the Prowlers, and I extended my talons as I descended to their level. They increased their pace, and agitated chitters met my ears.

But it was too late for them.

A loud bird screech erupted from my beak as I dove toward two of the Prowlers in front of me, and I closed my talons around the napes of their necks.
