Chapter Fifteen

I WAS RESTING BLISSFULLY until the phone blared. Was I ready for the troops to arrive for Thanksgiving dinner? Could I handle it? What was on the menu? Gigi was firing questions.

“I’ll get tickets on Sun Country for you and Guy, and Lenny, and Linda, and Lance and Amarilla, and the three Js. Yes, yes, I will have the house all ready by then. Gigi, have faith in your mom. I’m even going to cook. Gigi, I can do a turkey. No, I am not going to order it from the store. I will show you a thing or two about a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Remember that forty-pound turkey you got? I need to go to the bathroom. Call you soon. Let me know what days you all want to fly in and out. Talk to Lance and I’ll get the tickets. I’ll rent a van for us all to get around in while you’re here. Tell Guy and the kids hi. Gotta run.”

Ohh, that daughter, she knows how to interrupt a good dream. I dreamed Geoff and I were walking on the beach and he asked me to marry him. What a dreamer I was, but it felt good. Oh, darn, there’s the phone again. Maybe it’s Katie.

“Oh, hi, Shelly. How are you? So good to hear from you. I know, it’s been a hard time for Katie and her mother. I need to check in and see how they’re doing. I know you and Ashley must be worried about them, too. I’ll call you as soon as I get some news. How are you and Rob doing? Are you still coming over Wednesday night for dinner and talk? Oh, good. I’m glad you’re both doing well. You moved back in? Great, that must feel good. How’s the health club holding up without me? How’s Mitzi? Smiling at all? Still the same, huh? Well, tell her hi, and Ashley, too, and I’ll be by there tomorrow. Tell Ashley I need lots of work.”

I must, I must, I must increase my bust before I see Geoff again . . . Ha. Gee there’s the phone again. Hope it’s Katie.

Katie bore the worst possible news.

“Katie, is that you? What’s the matter? You sound upset. Where are you? Katie, calm down. Speak clearly; I can’t understand you. What? Oh no. Oh no. Oh, where is your mom? I’m on my way; meet me there. Can Brad drive you? Oh, let me talk to Brad. Brad, can you bring Katie to the hospital? Okay, tell her I’ll see her there shortly.”

After a quick shower and hair brushing, I grabbed my smokes, hopped into the Mustang and sped off. No troopers pulling me over this time, I hoped.

We met in the lobby and Katie threw herself in my arms, sobbing while Brad patted her on the shoulder.

“There, there, Katie. We need to see your mom. Blow your nose, and let’s go up.” We held hands, Katie sniffling, Brad looking at me over her shoulder, the frozen face melted.
