The important thing is that the escapism be proactive rather than passive. A lot of people who struggle with depression report spending a ton of time sitting around and watching TV… and report that they don’t feel any better for doing so. To use terms borrowed from cognitive behavior therapy, we are looking for things that provide a sense of pleasure and maybe even mastery.

One of the escapism ideas I talked about above is guided imagery. I’ve found that people get confused about guided imagery and meditation, thinking they are essentially the same thing. In fact, guided imagery is pretty much the opposite of meditation but still a very positive coping skill. Guided imagery is a form of storytelling. It is the use of words (and sometimes music and other soothing sounds) to invoke and guide you to a calm, focused, and relaxed state. Oftentimes you’re encouraged to use your imagination to picture yourself somewhere calming, like on a beach or in the woods. It’s a form of intentional and healthy distraction (escapism) from your current stressful situation.
