I don’t actually listen to music when I’m writing. I’ll listen when I’m not. I find it distracting, particularly if there are lyrics. But at that time, I was listening to Sting, the Gypsy Kings—who had a really original sound. World music was coming on stage at that point with Paul Simon and Graceland, King Sunny Ade, reggae. I listened to just about everything.

OK, let’s move on to something completely different. Did you watch The Sopranos?
