Chapter Four
Scott sat at the kitchen counter sipping coffee, absently watching Jilly because his mind refused to stop thinking about the scene with Robby last night. Especially the part where heâd stormed out after dropping the little bombshell about having a wife. Karen is gone. What the fuck does that mean? And why hadnât Scott had the balls to ask?
Jillian lowered the flame on the range and gave another stir to the oatmeal that would be Maddieâs breakfast whenever the little girl returned from her early morning hike with Park and his dogs. With a heavy sigh, Jillian poured herself a cup of coffee and sat on the stool next to Scott.
He shook his head and sighed dramatically. âI told you weâd bring you over to the dark side,â he said, eyeing her mug.
âShut up,â she grumbled. âI donât even like the stuff, but itâs always around and it smells so good. I thought I might try again, just to see. Maybe your brew will taste better than the first time I tried coffee.â
âWas that with Charlie and his ex?â
Jillian giggled. âOh my gosh, I canât tell you how weird it was to see him after all these years. Did you ever meet anyone you knew when you were a kid and it seemed like he was old until you met him again? Charlie would have been younger than I am now. Maybe eighteen or nineteen, I guess, but I thought he was so sophisticated.â
Scott laughed. âI have a hard time imagining anyone thinking of Charlie Turner as sophisticated.â
âOh, but he was,â Jillian said. She stared toward the backdoor, a small smile curving her mouth. âHe was so handsomeâ¦and so in love. I thought it was the most romantic thing.â
âIt didnât bother you that he was gay?â
A crease formed between her brows and her gaze drifted to Maddieâs highchair then she looked directly at Scott. âWhy would it bother me? I certainly wasnât in any situation to judge someone elseâ¦â Her eyes took on an extra sheen as she turned back to the chair. âIf you truly love someone, then you have to be prepared to love them for who they really areâ¦not who you imagine them to be. Or want them to beâ¦â
âFunny, I keep hearing that,â Scott said, but he didnât feel like laughing. He needed to return to a safer subject. âTry your coffee before it cools. It is good, I promise. Although, if you donât like it black, you can try it with some of the French vanilla creamer I bought yesterday.â
âYou drink it black,â she pointed out.
âJilly, when we were on the fire line, I used to empty a packet of freeze-dried coffee straight onto my tongue. Trust me when I say youâll never appreciate coffee the way I do.â
Sounds from the dining room drifted in through the doorway and they exchanged a glance. It was his turn to go out and greet the guests, but damnâ¦it had been a long night.
How can you say
