Gallagher’s drawing provides us with a solid, straight-on eye level that lets us see and experience everything, without fear of falling or being crushed.

STRAIGHT-ON POSITION

Ellen Gallagher’s Watery Ecstatic Series, shown on this page, utilizes a straight-on eye level, easily discerned by how we can see the underside of the ribbony forms near the top of the drawing, and the upper side of those near the bottom. This puts our eye at a level in the middle, even with these forms twisting and curling everywhere. Gallagher’s eye level allows us to stand up and be comfortable on our own two feet, and therefore enjoy her drawing face to face.
