PART THREE

DECISION REACTION

CHAPTER EIGHT

ALIVE INSIDE

BACK TO THE PRESENT

1

‘Going into some random warehouse isn’t smart...’ James hissed, trying to both keep his voice quiet but also commanding, ‘My shift will be over in a couple of hours, and then my bosses will find out about this little day trip and we’ll all be fucked, really fucked… like really properly fucked. They won’t think twice about pulling up the ladder and leaving us here.’

‘Well, too bad for you, you don’t get a vote in this.’ Paul said, less careful with his volume.

Ross was the closest of the three to the road that led to the bannered warehouse, kneeling, observing the far off building using the binoculars that came with the ruck-sack kits, ‘I’ve gotta agree with James,’ Ross chipped in, binoculars still to face he added, ‘This place was fortified pretty well, they’ve set up barbed wire traps along the road and god knows what else...’

Paul scoffed. ‘You don’t get a vote eva, fuck it, there is no vote. I’m in charge - I say we go.’

‘Hold on...’ Ross said standing, peering through the device, craning his neck and stretching up onto his tip-toes for a better view, ‘I change my vote… I say we go as well.’

James sighed, ‘Why?’

Paul huffed to himself. ‘There is no voting...’

‘I got hung up on looking at all the traps and stuff along the road. I didn’t give the warehouse itself a good look.’

‘And?’ Paul said.

‘On top… ladders that I think could cross to the spaghetti junction.’

In unison, James and Paul started sifting through their own packs looking for their own binoculars.

‘Ross you keep an eye out for zombies.’ Paul said while assessing the warehouse for himself.

James stood close examining the upper rigging, ‘Contaminated.’ He amended without realising it.

Ross was correct, with the naked eye one could see a small brown band above the flat grey plane that was the warehouse’s roof, at greater magnification though, it was possible to see intricate additions constructed on three of the sides. Looking like bird watching hides, small wooden sheds with narrow slits along their walls to survey for peril, ‘They had their own overlooks...’ James said to himself, impressed with the complexity of thought the camp showed, ‘There is something else up there...’ On the one side without a wooden overlook there was instead a tangle of rigging, ropes and planks, so intricate and overlapping that at this distance and angle there was no level of magnification great enough to give a good enough view to make it comprehensible.

‘Enough words’, Paul said pushing down the binoculars James was holding on to his face, ‘There is a bridge over to the other side, that gives us two reasons to go have a look.’

‘Let me check the Active ma--’

‘That’s broken.’ Ross cut in.

In James, an impotent and boiling rage became transmogrified through repression and instead became a primaeval base and simple fear. He knew the shadows were where the dangerous hid and that even if had lost access to the Active Map Matt hadn’t.
