NISHA

Nisha stood at the fence at the end of her street and even though she was scared, she smiled.

She looked down the road, past the fence that they were building the new houses behind, and she saw her house, right down the road. Her road looked… quiet. There were none of the bad people. There was nobody about at all, actually. Which… was a good thing, wasn’t it? Maybe the bad people hadn’t made it here. Maybe it was still safe here. Maybe home was going to be okay. Maybe everything was going to be okay.

She swallowed a big lump in her throat. Her chest felt sore, like when she’d had an infection when she was younger, and she couldn’t stop coughing all night. Everything looked weird. Fuzzy, in a way. And everything felt weird, too. She wanted to sleep. She wanted to get home and close her bedroom door and sleep. No—no, she wanted to sleep in Dad’s bed, with his warmth beside her. She’d be safe there. She’d be okay there. Everything would be okay by Dad’s side.

She took a step towards the fence and suddenly felt a weight stopping her.

She looked down. Dwayne. It was his hand. Holding her. Stopping her from moving. Why was he stopping her? Why didn’t he want her to move?

She looked up. He was covering his mouth with a finger. Quiet. He wanted… he wanted her to be quiet.

She looked around and right away, she realised why.

A man. Running down the road. His mouth moving, like he was… like he was screaming. Running as fast as he could. Looking over his shoulder at someone chasing after him.

Her heart started to thud. She felt dizzy. A little bit sick. She’d seen so many bad things. So much… so much blood. So much death. She didn’t want to see any more. Especially not on her street. Not outside her home. Where she was supposed to be safe.

She watched this man running past. Dwayne kept his hand against her chest, stopping her from moving. And he kept his finger over his lips, too. She waited. Waited, as he ran down the road. As he staggered forward. As…

Two more people. Running around the corner. Chasing him.

And the way they moved, the way they flailed their arms around, the way their legs twitched from side to side… they were the bad people.

They ran after the man. Kept on chasing him. And Nisha hoped they kept on running. She hoped the man got away. And she also hoped that all of them got off this street, and away from her home.

She stood there, very still. Her home so near, and yet so far away.

And then she saw something awful.

The man tumbled over. Slammed against the road. Within a few seconds, the people chasing him were on top of him, and biting him, and punching him, and blood was splattering everywhere, and...

Dwayne tapped her. On her shoulder. He pointed ahead. And then he moved his hand across his neck, and shook his head.
