AFTER A THREE-DAY RECESS for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, court resumed on the morning of Tuesday, October 9, and Jamie Hanna continued the Crown evidence. Bill Matiyekâs girlfriend repeated the evidence sheâd given at the preliminary, describing a night of heavy drinking, the slap sheâd received from Fred Jones, and how sheâd moved to another table.
When a group of fifteen or twenty men suddenly entered the hotel, she had told Cathy Cotgrave to call the police, and then gone back over to Billâs table. âI sat on his right side.⦠Rick Sauvé came over to the table and he whispered in Billâs left ear and he then turned to me and said, âChick, get the fuck away from the table.â I looked at Bill and Bill agreed with him and said, âYes. I think you had better leave,â and he said, âGood-bye,â and I left.â
Rick Sauvé had remained at the table, standing to Billâs left, she recalled. About two or three seconds later sheâd heard the first shot.
As he had at the preliminary, Howard Kerbel tried unsuccessfully to get a description from Hanna of the man whoâd sat down with her and the old man at her table. She couldnât remember what the newcomer had looked like, what he had said, or whether he had introduced himself. She did remember that the gunman was left-handed, however, and she had had a clear view of him. He was roughly six feet tall with a blond beard and a blond moustache.
Hanna told Jack Grossman that she was certain that Rick Sauvé was not the gunman, and she repeated that sheâd last seen Sauvé standing to Billâs left. Grossman doubtless hoped that the jury would pick up on this inconsistency. Sauvé had now been seen in three different places or positions at once, by four major Crown witnesses. Gayle Thompson had put him one chair away to Billâs right during or moments before the shooting, while Cathy Cotgrave and Sue Foote had seen him sitting to Billâs immediate left. Jamie Hanna, too, had seen him on Billâs left, but standing, not sitting.
