Chapter 6 – Brothel Dynamics

Quiet Nights

Being a prostitute wasn’t the most glamorous job in the world, it wasn’t even adventurous. Most of the time it was fairly monotonous, sometimes it was downright boring; especially in between clients on quiet nights. However, Angelien was pretty good at keeping herself occupied and amused. Quiet nights provided a chance to get to know the other girls with whom she worked. This was when it could be fun, especially when all the girls were sitting together talking about their clients' idiosyncrasies.

When they weren't dissecting their work some of the girls read, knitted or crocheted; some of them slept, and some chatted about regular life. It was almost like a women’s gathering, and Angelien would sometimes forget where she really was. They talked about their problems, dreams and ambitions but kept it all at arm’s length. The one thing they learned was not to have contact with each other in the outside world. Rebecca had warned them against it, as being seen together outside the brothel made them easier to recognise. After leaving for the night, they all had normal lives to return to; families, friends, housework, shopping and all the usual things everyone did when they weren’t working.
