Happy Days

Right…I am counting down the days to Venice, I have enough money for four months' rent and loads of presents for my family…Phew…what a relief my shifts were over till the new year. Now I could relax and was really looking forward to the celebrations—not so much the bickering and family fighting that went with it, but the break from the sauna. The year had ended with its fair share of drama. Life in the house was a strange thing—one girl has a damn good day and another has the day from hell. One day, Jane arrived at the lounge door, holding her rubbish bag from a job, looking as pale as a sheet and shaking.

Oh dear—the job was definitely fucking with her head that day. We all looked up as she blubbered, "Condom broke! It broke! Oh, fuck, not on the pill! Wrong time! Ohhh, fuck!!"

"Shit," was the chorus. Layla went over to hug her, and they went into the bathroom to talk.

You could hear the sobbing in the lounge, and I bet "Thank fuck it wasn't me" was going through everyone's heads—it certainly was mine. Poor cow. Now, a girl will go two ways if that happens: a) hysterical or b) quiet. Jane was about to get as hysterical as any girl I have known, and she lost the plot so much so that the recep, dithery Cebell, rang Mrs. B to come and deal with the situation. Jane was still in hysterics when Mrs. B arrived, and she ushered Jane upstairs to her flat to try and calm her down. It must have worked, as the sobbing subsided. After that, the lounge was rather quiet, so a music video was put on to dispel the low mood. Jane came down some hours later after a shower and a nap and quietly collected her stuff with Mrs. B, who helped her into a cab. It was the last straw for both of them—Jane had dramatically quit, again—but this time it really was the last we heard from her.

No two ways about it, the job was a psychological head-fuck. If you can't put the profession in a box, it can drive you crazy—you have to switch off. At work you need to be in role all the time, a sort of invincible version of the real you. The client must never sense weakness, and it's all about body language; they need to know they can't walk all over you (unless that's what they are paying for!). That's the main reason girls have working names: it helps you to become someone else and protects your real mental state and sense of self. You can be as bold, brash, and feisty as your persona allows you to be, even if it's nothing like the real you. Unfortunately for Jane, she was always totally Jane and just couldn't separate her real life from her working one. Her separation problem wasn't helped by the fact that she didn't like either life in the first place.
