Chapter NineTGIFTHE week was coming to a tense close with all of the action in the Middle East. One good thing that occurred, of course, was the nomination of a new Vice-President. Confirmation hearings had already been scheduled for next Wednesday, and I hoped to have her sworn in by the following Friday.

"Mary, would you tell the appropriate people that I would like to spend my first weekend as President at Camp David? I want to leave this afternoon, and come back Monday morning."

"Of course, Mr. President."

It was already 1:30, and arrangements kicked into high gear. The professionals who moved the President were used to last minute arrangements being made, and a trip to Camp David involved only minimal assets. Shane opened the door and entered the office.

"Hi there,” I said with a smile.

"Hello, Mr. President. We're going to Camp David?"

"Yes. I trust you'll be coming with me?"

"Of course, sir. Where you go, I go."

"I've never been to Camp David before. How close will your quarters be to mine?"

"About a hundred and twenty feet. There's a building that houses only Secret Service. There is also a small Marine detachment that patrols the perimeter and entry gates, plus the pilots of Marine One, and medical personnel."

"I guess I'm asking because I would enjoy your special company while up there; is that possible?"

"I'll make it possible, sir,” Shane replied with a grin.

"Good. Then hopefully we can be together again tonight. I need you."

"And I you. I've always wanted to make love in the woods,” he said with a laugh. “I'll let you know as soon as possible our departure time, but I would estimate you should prepare to leave in about an hour."

"Fine, Shane, thanks. Please let Mary know so that she can have James pack a bag for me for the weekend. You need to do the same, so why don't you take care of that?"

"Okay, I'll tend to that now. See you shortly."

I watched Shane walk out of the Oval Office and felt myself grow stiff in my pants. He was such a visual delight and the warmth in his voice made me grow more and more fond of this man. I took a few more phone calls, including one with the Secretary of State regarding the Middle East summit. I was assured that all arrangements would be swiftly made and dates set. The phone buzzed, bringing news I had been waiting to hear.

The one thing that I had in common with George Bush was that my canine companion was in fact a Scott Terrier, named Mary. She was a wonderful little Scottie with a personality that lit up the room when she entered. She was smart, a great hunter, and above all else, four legs of walking love. She was perhaps the only living thing that could bring a smile to my face quicker than Shane. Mary the Scottie had just arrived at the White House by special conveyance. She had been back in Pennsylvania at my home and had been kept there until I was settled into the White House.
