We all say our goodbyes to Don as he stands and leaves as abruptly as he entered.

When I hear the final door close, I scan the guys. “He seemed a little deep today?!”

They nod in agreement. “I think he regrets not having a family of his own, that’s all,” Cal states.

“He’s got us!” Bren winks. “Lucky fucker, has us!” His grin widens, and his eyebrows dance, making us laugh.

Chapter Thirteen

Will

Con left us alone while he went to the warehouse for a meeting. He told me they had updates from Jack to discuss.

Knowing that Jack is okay and working with the guys brings a sense of ease to me. There isn’t the initial competition I first encountered. I like the fact they’re working together, for me and for Keen.

Con had told Keen he had a surprise for him in his gym room, so as soon as we entered the apartment, Keen took off and an excited squeal came from the room.

I smiled to myself as I made my way to the room next to mine. When I walked in, I gasped at the transformation. Con had clearly hired someone to come in and redecorate the room. It’s now a beautifully decorated LEGO themed bedroom, complete with a Peppa Pig toy box. Keen goes wild inspecting the room as I watch him opening and closing the drawers, closet, and toy boxes. His happiness is infectious.

I bathe Keen and settle him in his new bed, complete with story and a cheesy smile from my little dude. My heart warming as his little smile and his heavy eyes struggle to stay open. I brush his curls from his forehead and kiss him goodnight.

Once I’m showered, I await anxiously on the couch for Con to return.

The state he was in earlier made me want to hold him tight and never let him go. The vulnerability shining in his eyes taking me back to the night that changed him. Changed us.

I can’t believe after five years he’s still fighting his demons with such intensity. He needs to see someone before they swallow him whole.

The blame and guilt he holds over himself for the death of his brother is agonizing and crushing his soul and heart.

He’s pushed me away before, and I know he’s capable of that again. It’s not something I’m prepared to go through, not with Keen in tow.

Unease spreads through me the longer the night goes on.

Is he coming home? Has he gone somewhere else? Is he getting high? I nibble my nail in annoyance.

The click of the door has me bolting to my feet, and I rush over to him. His head is downcast, his body tense. I swoop in and pull him toward me, and without thinking I hug him tight. His body drains against my touch.

Con’s hands band around me, his fingers digging into my spine with the pressure of his hold. His body trembles with relief and his breath tickles my neck as his head nuzzles into me. “Thank you.” His words soften my encased heart.
