Stage four: Commemoration lapses

The repeated iterations of activity around and concerning the commemorations at Chaironeia, particularly reflected through literary sources, led to a subsequent lapse. Already by the second century CE, the weight of multiple definitions had blurred and complicated the monuments on the field. Physically, the commemorations of Sulla’s victory of 86 BCE were a key change, and the subsequent monuments heightened the temporal distance from 338 BCE. Contemporary authors also needed to reconcile the fact that multiple famous battles had occurred in the same space, and each dealt with it as their circumstances allowed.
