The article went on to describe the purchase of the rifle in Chicago. It concluded with quotes of the Mufti’s threats against any supporter of the partition vote and his implacable hatred of Jews.

John approved Pilch’s edits and dictated a few of his own. “It’s good to go,” he said.

“Great. Hey, this means you’ll have two stories in tomorrow morning’s paper. We have that one on the kids you sent in earlier. Put it in the women’s section, but it’ll still get good play. Great photos, by the way, especially the one of you and the young lady. You’re some hotshot, you know that? Babysitting those students the same time you’re chasing down an international assassination plot.”

He wished he could confess that Jeanne had written the article about the school trip but was more than a little surprised that Pilch hadn’t noticed a difference in quality between the two articles. Something Pilch said stuck in his mind.

“Wait a minute. What young lady?”

“The one in the photo with Lady Liberty behind you. Great shot!”

He hadn’t meant to send the photo Cullerton had taken of him and Jeanne, just the one with the students in Times Square. The AP must have screwed up.

“Something wrong?” Pilch asked. “We gotta hurry here.”

John thought for a minute. “Nope, nothing at all, Mr. Pilch. Run ’em both.”

Why shouldn’t her picture be in the paper? No one at the Sun knew of their friendship. It was a way to pay her back for writing the article.

At the thought of Jeanne, he had a sudden pang of guilt. He’d never kissed two women in the same month, much less on the same day. And he was supposed to see Jeanne again in less than an hour. He tried to reassure himself that there was no reason for either of them to be upset but was dimly aware that reason might not have anything to do with it.

To distract himself from his uncomfortable train of thought, he asked Pilch, “So, the printer’s strike is still on?”

“Yeah,” the editor answered, “but there’s a way they can engrave the newspaper instead of using the linotype. Management’s fed up, talking about just firing all the printers.”

“It’ll never work,” he said. “The A.F. of L. will get all the other unions involved. We wouldn’t be able to put out a flyer.”

“Well, tomorrow’s paper will get out, don’t you worry about that. I’m going to get the AP to pick up this assassination story under your byline. Might see it in some of the New York papers tomorrow afternoon.”

“Gee, thanks, Mr. Pilch.”

“No thanks necessary. This is an important story. Everyone’s going to want it. Even the Trib will have to report it. You’ll be famous.”
