The Light Box Method

Place your photographic reference on a light box, and position your paper on top of the photograph. You might want to use artist tape to secure each layer. Turn on the light box. This lets light shine through the photograph, allowing the basic outline of the image to be visible through the paper. Using a graphite pencil, trace the image. If you don’t have a light box, then an alternative transparent surface (such as a window, glass, door, or spare piece of glass with the edges taped) set up in front of an alternative light source can be used instead.

PROS This is much faster than the aforementioned grid method, and it does teach some hand-eye coordination.

CONS This method doesn’t teach drawing skills from life, and it also doesn’t work if you are using one of the thicker papers.
