Chapter Thirteen

Nick, grim-faced and silent, lit a thin cigar and headed for the bunkhouse.

Bathed and clean-shaven he dressed to fit his mood. From the scarf around his

neck to his silky, pearl buttoned shirt, cowhide vest, and whipcord pants

tucked into gleaming high-topped boots, he was dressed completely in black.

A black knife scabbard containing a wicked silver blade hung from the

matching leather belt encircling his waist. A black-barreled . hung low at

his right hip, its walnut handle shiny from use. His black-gloved hand tugged

the flat-crowned black hat even lower, shading his eyes. He looked like what

he was… a very dangerous man.

Nick felt like a cornered wolf with one foot caught in a trap. He could

either struggle to escape, or he could chew his foot off and get the hell out

while he could. The alternatives didn't help his disposition any. He was

spoiling for a fight.

He clenched his teeth on the Spanish cigar and pushed the cookhouse door
