Chapter Sixteen
CARTER
I like walking on the beach with Fox.
We have to go pretty damn slow for my sake, but it means we get to talk a lot more deeply.
Even if he doesnât want to get his heart involved, Iâm so glad heâll let me stray close to him in an emotional moment.
This time when we set off walking again, weâre just close enough together that our spare hands brush together.
Maybe Iâm orchestrating it slightly by carrying the coffee in my left hand, not my right⦠but Fox doesnât have to know that.
âSo you hate fancy mansions and elbow room, right?â Fox quips.
âWhat?â I laugh. Iâm not sure where heâs going for this, but Iâm prepared to be roasted a little. I think Iâve earned it several times over with my custom-ordered electric Chevy replica golf cart. âIâm not exactly living in a tiny home.â
âWell, you could be getting groceries delivered to your Vancouver penthouse. But youâre about to join the morning rush for fresh milk.â
Whoa. Iâm only getting one thing from that, and itâs delightful. âThey sell milk now?â I exclaim. âI need more, actuallyâ¦â
Is that a rude way to end a date? For that matter, is this a date? Every time seeing Fox raises even more questions.
âIt was new last summer. My parents called me about it,â Fox laughs. âBut itâs first-come, first-served and the first ferry brings it over.â
âOh. They donât have a fridge?â I blush before the questionâs even out of my mouth.
âIn the worldâs smallest grocery store, no, they donât,â Fox teases me with a straight face.
I raise my coffee cup and point it at him. âIâll bet you thereâs a vending machine out there somewhere that technically counts as a grocery store.â
âOnly on a technicality. Face it. Sunrise Groceries is the size of a shoeboxâand Iâm an expert, so you canât argue,â Fox says with a grin.
Whoa.
I canât believe heâs able to joke about that already. It startles me into a laugh, and then he grins at me all smugly and my heart just melts.
Iâve never seen that look on his face⦠but it suits him beautifully.
And it makes my brain stop in its tracks, so I couldnât argue back even if I wanted to.
âOkay,â I agree, swaying toward him with my next steps. âIâll let you play that card.â
âI think that card comes with unlimited lifetime play,â Fox tells me.
âNo, yeah. Youâre good.â
After a minute, my mind drifts back to the beginning of the conversation, and I glance at him.
Is he trying to ask if I miss that lifestyle? Thatâs a rant Iâm more than happy to go on with him.
âI hate the whole sideshow,â I tell him. âThe press tours and the behind-the-scenes bullshit where we have to like, play these personasâ¦â
I just wanted to be a guy who plays hockey the best I possibly can. I put up with the rest of it so I can do that. But when they want me to be someone else, I put my foot down.
