“Predatory, serial sexual attacks are very rare, and when there’s a similarity and character over a relatively short period of time, that tends to point to the likelihood that we are looking for the same person,” says Neil Boyd, director of the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University.

CHAPTER 10

Second Seven-Year-Old Goes Missing

On Thursday, November 20, 1969, two years after the murder of Nancy Johnsen in Cloverdale, Evangeline Azarcon disappeared on the way home from school in Vancouver. Her abduction sparked the biggest search in BC’s history.

The Azarcons had moved to Vancouver from Manila in the Philippines, a little over three years before. Alejandro, a thirty-five-year-old mechanical engineer, worked for Canadian Comstock. “We came to Canada for the sake of the children,” a distraught Alejandro told a reporter after his daughter went missing. “My Canadian boss in Manila told us about the good chances here, and it is true. There are so many schools, playgrounds, parks.”

It was, however, a move he began to regret as he paced the worn rug in his living room, waiting for word about Evangeline, a grade-two student at Edith Cavell Elementary.
