Chapter Nine
Sonny's lungs hitched and tightened, like a puck had just slammed into his chest. His gaze dropped to the hand held out in front of him. The slender fingers, pale in the dim light, trembled, matching the small waver in her voice.
His gaze moved to Monica's face, taking in the hesitant smile and wide eyes. She was offering him a gift, of that he had no doubt. But did she have any idea how precious that gift was?
He stood up and took her hand, not surprised at the chilled touch of her skin. Instead of letting her lead him, he pulled her against him. With no warning and no hesitation, he dropped his mouth to hers for a warm sweet kiss. She sighed, the sound mingling with his own, and pressed herself closer.
He should say something. His mind knew he should but he couldn't find the words. What the hell did he know about words? About soft whispers and flowery phrases? Not a damn thing.
He gentled the kiss and stepped away, ignoring the flash of disappointment in her eyes. Then he leaned down and swooped her into his arms, cradling her soft body against his chest.
Her eyes widened as he started walking toward the stairs. Her hands pushed against his chest then curled into his shirt as she shook her head.
"You're going to hurt yourself. I'm too heavy—"
"Bullshit." He didn't mean the word to come out as a growl. His face heated and he stammered an apology. "I mean, nonsense. You're not heavy."
Monica blinked but didn't say anything, not until he reached the top of the stairs and paused. Her lids lowered over wide eyes and she nodded to their left. "That's…that way."
Sonny eased open the door and stepped inside, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. A bulky shadow loomed in the center of the room and he moved toward it. His mouth captured hers again as he eased her from his arms, her body sliding down his until she gained her feet.
He kept kissing her, needing her to melt against him, needing the last of her tension to melt away. It wasn't a hardship, not with her soft mouth and sweet taste and the tiny murmurs she probably didn't know she was making. He could kiss her all night and go home a happy man.
Her hands moved between them, her fingers fumbling with his shirt buttons. Sonny swallowed a groan and eased away from her, putting space between them. He reached for his tie, unknotted it and pulled it from around his neck. She had two buttons opened, her fingers trembling even more as her hand moved lower. The third button stuck. A little sound of impatience escaped her parted lips, making him smile.
He grabbed her hands and brought them to his mouth, grazed her knuckles with a kiss. Then he stepped back, his eyes searching the shadows near her bed. A second later, soft light filled the room from the lamp next to her bed.
