MADDY
When I saw Hank talking to Fantasia, who was tasked as the scorer, a little stab of jealousy hit somewhere in my belly. Fantasia dressed the part, wearing a low-cut half-shirt advertising a bar in Texas and obscenely short Daisy Dukes with a large belt buckle and cowboy boots. She had tanned legs for miles and she looked seriously sexy. My head thought it was good. Maybe Hank would keep himself occupied with her now instead. Besides we werenât seeing each other. Hell, we werenât anything at all. Heâd been nice, acted friendly, and we had amazing chemistry, but we wanted different things. It was over between us the moment he wanted to take my freedom of choice from me.
Not to mention that I had just over two weeks left to figure out how to fix my messy life. I was too busy to deal with Hank and what he wanted from me.
I swallowed hard, forcing any residual jealousy down while I focused on the crowd in front of me. âGood evening, yâall!â
The crowd was already liquoring up and eager to have some fun, so I started the festivities, explained the rules, and began reading the questions.
Hank and I read every other question, adding a little extra flare when the occasion called for it. He seemed to have his most pronounced drawl in place, probably at Kileyâs request, so a few times I had to repeat the question for those who didnât speak Texan rancher.
Then between sets of ten questions, Hank âspun some yarns,â as he called it, telling stories while the hockey players acted as runners and brought the scorecards to Fantasia. I kept my focus anywhere but him. Like watching Fantasia who did her part with the scores. Fun fact: she was a math major in college, so she actually found the percentages and scoring not only interesting but easy enough to do in her head, like a human calculator.
In my efforts to ignore Hank, I kept my focus on the men running up to the platform. Some wore plaid long-sleeved shirts rolled up to their elbows. Some wore a plain-colored t-shirt tucked into their jeans. A few wore untucked graphic tees like Kiley. But no matter what shirt they wore, they all filled out their jeans nicely. Just watching them walk up and down the steps was worth the price of admission for most of the women here.
Though none of them looked quite as comfortable in the role of cowboy as Hank. My eyes drifted back to his thick thighs stretching the limits of his jeans. His olive plaid shirt across his broad chest, highlighting his green sparkling eyes. Even the stubble that covered his jaw was like it was meant to be there to create this handsome man.
At the end of the first half, just after the last question, we were supposed to break for dancing. Instead, Hank began ad-libbing again but this time, it wasnât one of his usual tall tales.
He touched his hat. âHey,
