A: Yes, yes, I remember…. He obviously was not one of the greatest Chief Justices, most learned Chief Justices we’ve had in this country…. But on the other hand…[pause]…I think he was a sound chief justice. He was competent. Particularly competent administrative…

Q: Many said he was appointed by Truman to bring these divisions together within the Court.

A: Harmonize. At least the personal relations…. I suspect he had pretty good success in this. This area he really had a gift to operate.

Q: How do you evaluate Vinson’s overall career as chief justice?

A: [Long pause] Well…I…I…this is a very difficult thing for me to comment on…because…this date, I don’t have enough facts to base my opinion on…. I think his administration of office was good, an adequate chief justice; functioned acceptably. He was not a distinguished lawyer. He certainly wouldn’t be put in the first rank of Chief Justices…. As far as his contributions to jurisprudence generally, I think they were…[pause]…[pause]…They were…[pause]…They were certainly…[pause]…a…It’s hard to know how to express it.
