Chapter fifteen

The Devil in I

Seraphina’s vision was hazy. With a quick glance around the room, she recognized where she was. The emptiness of the room with but a single cross of light bearing down upon her. Beyond the marble ceiling above her was one of the temples to Io upon the world of Amadon. The smell of blood clung to the air. The sounds of screaming, rioting, and bloodshed were abundant inside. Then she realized why she was here. It was the beginning.

“SHE JUST WANTED THE PEOPLE TO BE FREE!” The silhouette of a man was in front of her, an orb-like helmet with a shattered skull was on the floor beside his feet. He shouted, “All she ever dreamed about was a world where children never risked being persecuted for using magic, the very thing that fuels their life. For being different than the order that was forced upon us! Your order killed her! You killed her! You killed my wife!”

His hands dropped by his side, his curved horns reflecting the barren light above them. His tone became somber as he wiped the tears from his eyes. “So go ahead. Kill me. It will only push the people further.” He reached down and donned his helmet. “The Hellhounds…I will make sure her dream comes true.” With a soldier’s stride, he walked out of the room.

In a flash of light, she found herself within a large, throne-like room. Above her was a large depiction of Io, much like the one within Ellora’s temple. To the sides were numerous shelves lined to the brim with ancient texts. She saw herself kneeling in front of her. At the table in front of the statue of Io was her mother.

Her silver helmet emblazoned with the icon of the crescent moon sat upon the table. Her glistening, silver hair matched her armor. Whereas most armor tends to lean toward chainmail for joints, hers resembled the starry night sky.

It was stronger than steel, and projectiles were pulled into it before they were absorbed. Akin to her sword, her mother’s armor and weapon were woven from her own mana. It was a technique Seraphina’s grandfather had developed that he had passed down to his children.

The question that was always on her mind returned. She watched as she herself lifted her head from kneeling toward her mother. “Mother…are we in the right? I thought we were on the side of order…to protect the people. But on Amadon, the people wanted to be free from our rule. They fought us with every fiber of their being. So, Mother…are we in the right?! Please, I need to know.”

Her mother lifted her hand and beckoned her. Seraphina lifted herself from the temple’s ground. “I do not know, Seraphina. Your uncle asked similar questions. It is for this reason he was branded a heretic. I fear you walk the same path as he, but I do not hold the answers you seek.”

The door behind Seraphina opened. “You have already made the folly of questioning, daughter.
