Chapter Twenty-Eight

A nimbus of light revealed the edges of the hooded doctor through the cracked door, but unlike previous visits, Alex felt no welcoming vibe. Her back bristled and her feet tapped in place.

"I'm sorry for the surprise visit," said Alex. "We need your help."

The door remained only a crack open, just enough that Alex could see his mask in the gray light from the street.

"This isn't a good time," said Dr. Althud. "You should come back later."

"That's the thing," said Alex. "We can't. Is there any way you can see us now?"

The door edged wider, and Dr. Althud peered at Lily, who had her back to the doctor as she scanned the street for their pursuers.

"We? I thought I only had a singular patient," he said disappointedly.

"Now you have two? Please, Dr. Althud, we're on a difficult timetable, and we may have some people following us. It's best if we're not standing on the open street," she said.

He made no move to welcome them in.

"I'm sorry, Alex, but I'm not a charity. I was contracted by Golden Willow to help with your problem"—he spoke in his pleasant doctor tone, but then it changed as he added in a voice that gave her shivers—"but as I said, this is not a good time."

Lily suddenly ducked down the stairs. "Two of them are coming this way. They didn't see me, but they'll find us here for sure."

"Please, Dr. Althud," said Alex. "She's a member of my hall. This is Lily."

After a long pause, during which Alex kept expecting the door to slam shut, the doctor said, "Give me a moment. But when I let you in, you must follow my instructions exactly. No errors, no mistakes. Exactly."

Lily gave her a worried glance, but Alex said right away, "Yes, of course. Exactly."

Alex stepped forward, but the door closed.

Under her breath, Lily said, "What the hell have you gotten us into? Every part of me is saying not to go in there. That we're better off facing those mages."

"Trust me," said Alex, even though she agreed with her. "He's okay. Odd, but we need his help."

Before Lily could say another word, the door opened again. They quickly slipped through, eyes adjusting to the darkness.

The robed form of Dr. Althud stood a few paces away, gloved hands clasped in front. A sense of malignant wrongness emanated from beyond the doctor as if a portal to a universe too strange to comprehend was in the back of the apartment.

"I'm going to take you both to my examination room. Say nothing, touch nothing, do nothing, until we reach there, and under no circumstances should you use magic. Not even a whiff. Don't answer, but nod, and then follow me," he said.

Alex nodded as she hurried after the doctor, staying close on his heels as if that might protect them from whatever lay beyond. She felt Lily's hand on her back, as if the touch comforted her. Alex reached behind and took her hand, squeezing reassuringly until they were under the bright lights of the examination room.
