(16) Barnes PJ. Pathophysiology of allergic inflammation. Immunol Rev 2011;242:31e50.

Barnes article is a discussion and analysis of factors that affect allergic inflamations including internal cells, DNA (our genetic makeup) and epigenetics. The study describes a ‘complex interplay’ of cells that are tied to inflammatory allergic reactions and localized effects (airway, vasculor, (blood vessels, veins, arteries, et al) ‘muscular’, epithelial (coating that covers the outer part of the body and/or cells that line hollow organs and produce mucous).

This scientific study in ‘lay terms’ presents relevant ‘systems’ concepts of external and internal effects (inputs) and mediating measures and outputs or results. Reactionary genes (internal) are regulated by DNA and ‘histones’ according to the study. The challenge of understanding the ‘process’ and also, appropriate treatment options remains unresolved. Current treatments include cortisteroids for both modulation and suppression. This frames the nature of epigenomic studies--- many questions remain unanswered.

Based on a cursory review, there are many outstanding questions and unresolved ways of effective treatment of allergic inflammation. One of the issues may include the area where the allergic inflammation is manifested. For example, breathing vs. inflammed skin vs. ‘blood related’/vasculor reactions may or may not be require different treatments. An injection vs inhalants, for example. The article provides current information on latest trends in the study of epigenetcs in a series of research studies edited by Tollefson.
