Chapter 20

After what seemed like one of the longest weeks of her life, Spencer finally found herself sitting in Jen’s car looking out at Courtney’s modest colonial-style house. It had a well-manicured lawn with several tall oak trees on either side with planter boxes filled with flowers under the windows. It looked like a place that Spencer could come home to every day after work. A small flutter started in the pit of her stomach as she thought about what could be if they could just get past some of the walls that each of them had built up over the years. Good thing she owned a sledgehammer.

“So, you ready for this?” Jen looked at her with a serious expression. No matter how much grief and joking she put Spencer through, she still loved her like a sister and only wanted the best for her. “Are you sure you want to take that overnight bag in with you? That’s a lot of pressure.”

“Just because I agreed to stay the night doesn’t mean that we are going to sleep together.” Spencer reached into the back seat and grabbed her small duffle bag.

“See on the flip side, Small Fry.” Jen gave a wave of the hand, indicating that Spencer should get out.

“We’re the same height, remember?”

“Height is only relative, kinda like possession is nine-tenths of the law.” Jen laughed. “Now get outta here and go have a nice date.”

Taking a deep breath, Spencer finally reached for the door handle. She paused and looked over her shoulder and smiled. “Thanks for the ride. Tell Marilia I said ‘hi’.” The blush that colored Jen’s cheeks made Spencer laugh. “And you think I got it bad.”

“I never said I didn’t have it bad.” Jen ducked her head and looked away.

“We’ll save this conversation for another time.” Spencer finally opened the door and stepped outside. She glanced at her phone and the text Courtney had sent with her address to make sure it was the right place. When she was sure, she tapped the bumper to let Jen know she was ready for her leave.

As the car drove off, Spencer hesitated for a moment at the end of the long driveway and studied the two-car garage. It looked large enough to house two cars and all her tools. Wandering towards the front door with visions of domestic life with Courtney running through her mind made her smile. She questioned whether or not they could reach
