Brian had decided to give her another chance, but it was clear that he hadnât forgiven her. He had been cold toward her ever since The Incident. Seren could only hope that things would get better after the wedding. Weddings were filled with feel-good emotions, right? Maybe the emotions of the day would rekindle the warmth she and Brian had once felt toward each other.
Seren had accepted that she would never love Brian romantically, but she would dearly love to be friends with him again. They had been so close once, and she could use a best friend, especially now that she was no longer talking to Ash.
Every day since Ash had left, Seren had checked her phone, hoping for a message, but there was nothing. Ash was probably still hurt and angry over Serenâs rejection and didnât want to talk to her. Seren wondered dismally if Ash would ever want to talk to her again.
Seren was counting down the days until Christmas, and not in a good way. It was more like a countdown of doom. As much as she hoped the wedding would make things better, she was dreading it more and more every day. Of course, divorces could and did happen, so it wasnât like sheâd be tied to Brian forever after the wedding, but it was certainly a step not to be taken lightly.
They would be more bound than ever after Christmas. Seren knew the thought should fill her with joy, but it only made her want to scream and run so far away that her problems couldnât follow her.
Days stretched into weeks and Christmas grew closer. Things between Brian and Seren were as awkward and stilted as ever, and there was still no word from Ash.
âSeren? Earth to Seren?â
Seren looked up at Ruth from over the top of her coffee. âIâm sorry. What did you say?â
âI said, whatâs gotten you so down recently? Donât think I havenât noticed.â
Seren hadnât told anyone about Ash. The wound was still raw and it hurt to think about Ash, much less talk about her, but she didnât want to lie to Ruth.
âItâs Ash,â she admitted.
âDid something happen between you? You two were getting along so well, but you havenât mentioned her at all since the reunion.â
âShe kissed me.â
Ruth raised her eyebrows. âI see. How did Brian take it?â
âNot well. I guess⦠I guess I kind of kissed her back.â
Ruth whistled softly. âI can see why he didnât take it well, then. But youâre still together?â
Seren nodded miserably. Was it wrong that part of her half wished that Brian had broken up with her?
âSo, whatâs bothering you? Are you still feeling guilty about the kiss?â
Seren considered lying. She could just agree that all she was feeling was guilt and Ruth would accept it. She wouldnât have to go into her complicated heartache.
But she didnât want to lie to Ruth. Of course, she could simply say that she didnât want to talk about it, but Ruth deserved to know what was going on with her.
