Chapter 7 – Bailey

“Thank you! Have a great day!” I called out to my client as he walked out the front door. Before the door closed behind him my little boys came bustling through the opening with Thea hot on their tail. “Uh, good morning,” I said confused.

I looked out of the front windows of the shop for Finn or his truck, but he was nowhere to be found. It was Thursday and his normal morning breakfast date with the boys.

“You’re going to be mad at me,” Thea said with a look on her face that I couldn’t quite name. “But in my defense, I didn’t think about it before it happened.”

“What happened?”

She sighed and Pax slid his hand into mine, and I looked down at him. “Daddy went to kick some cattle pusher's ass.” His sweet angelic face split into a wicked grin full of baby teeth and pure joy.

My blood ran cold as I looked back up at Thea. “What the hell?”

This morning, one of the out-of-towners had hit on me at the diner as I grabbed a cup of coffee to go. He had been a sleazeball since the day he walked into town, hitting on anything with legs, and I had eagerly turned down his advance. But the diner had been full, and I knew more than one person saw it. I figured I had a little time to tell my husbands about it before the rumor mills got going though.

But apparently, I’d been wrong, like usual.

“When he found out about this morning with Colt, he took off to handle it.”

“When?” I snapped, grabbing my phone from my pocket, and pulling up his number.

“An hour!” I cried, listening to his phone ring and ring, but he didn’t answer it. Dread and anger filled my body as I tried again.

“The diner was swamped, and I couldn’t get over her before now,” Thea explained, I ended the call and tried my other husband’s phone. “Walker went with him.” She said with a grimace.

“Jesus-” I dropped my phone onto the counter and Parker wrapped his arms around my leg.

“Mama, are you mad at our daddies?” Both my boys were looking up at me with worry on their faces and I forced myself to take a deep breath. They were always so observant and picked up on any change in mood around them and if one of us was mad, it triggered them instantly.

“No, I’m not mad, I’m worried. I don’t want either of them getting hurt.” I said, sliding my fingers through their dark hair and trying to figure out what to do. Soon enough, I got my answer though as a police cruiser pulled up out front of my shop and I stood frozen in place as Jake got out of the front seat and walked up to my front door.

He looked pissed and maybe even slightly sad as he walked in, taking off his hat and looking directly at me.

“Tell me they’re alive.” I said instantly, unable to wait for him to deliver the bad news he was obviously here to give.
