Chapter Six
Lacey stumbled back a step with the recoil as it hit her shoulder awkwardly.
âHoly fucking Christ!â
At the sound of rocks falling, she opened her eyes to find Ray sliding down the side, the boulders heâd been sneaking behind having moved, leaving an opening she could see clearly through.
Once heâd found more cover, he yelled out. âListen, girl, I just want the horse. I donât give a fuck about you!â
No kidding. All he cared about was himself. She didnât answer. Instead, she sat on the ground and forced herself to let go of the shotgun. How much longer were they going to play this game. She only had one more shell. What if she shot to kill him and missed? What if she didnât?
She licked her dry lips, wishing she had the bottle of water sheâd stashed in Angelâs saddlebags. Some Christmas Day this was turning out to be. She clasped her hands together, her nerves stretched as far as they could go. Why couldnât Cole come home early? She looked at her watch. It wasnât even ten-thirty yet. Once he got home, how long would it take him to find her?
She couldnât wait for Cole. She had to do something. Her choices were simple, hightail it up to the rim and try to outrun the man or kill him.
Unclasping her hands, she worked the soreness out of her fingers from holding the gun so tight. Some rancherâs wife she would make. Her fingers were used to working a computer keyboard, not the trigger of a gun.
She rubbed her shoulder, only to find she had blood soaking through her sleeve. The recoil must have dislodged the stone. Cole had taught her how to hold the gun, but in her panic mode, sheâd forgotten. There wasnât much she could do about the blood. Besides, it was already slowing.
She stood up, bringing the gun to her shoulder in the right position as she remembered her shooting lessons.
Line up the sight with the target. Take a breath, squeeze the trigger, and this time keep your eyes open. Lacey could hear Cole chuckle as he instructed her. Sheâd hit everything but the old trash can heâd set up as her target.
Keep her eyes open. Of course. She could do this. She froze. If she kept her eyes open, she would see the shell kill the man. She really didnât want to do that, but if he forced the issue, she had no choice. Finding her resolve cowering behind her appendix, she forced it out of hiding.
She could do this. She could do this. She couldâwhat was that?
A single stone rolled down from the rim. âAngel?â
âIâve been called many things, but never an angel.â
Lacey swung the gun toward the husky voice, her finger found the trigger and she took a breath.

âHey Cole, wake up.â
Cole opened his eyes to find Clark standing above him. âWhat time is it?â
âItâs a little after ten. How was the shift?â
Cole sat up and threw his legs over the side of the bed, but kept the blanket over his naked package.
