After the family had left, Grace sat at the bar drinking a cappuccino she had ordered from Simon. She’d had a lovely meal with Jaz and her family. Even Val had warmed to her and grabbed her for a hug before leaving.

‘Won’t that keep you awake?’ Simon asked pointing to her coffee.

She shook her head. ‘Nothing will keep me awake tonight. I had wine with my lunch and dinner, plus two enormous meals and a dessert.’

Simon went from the bar to see his family off.

‘Hey, it’s Grace, isn’t it?’

Grace turned to see a man staring at her. The guy looked familiar. His warm smile juxtaposed his harsh, weathered face.

He put a hand to his chest. ‘Rob.’

‘Ah, yes,’ she said remembering him being a friend of Tommy’s. She had watched him box, which had involved quite a bit of blood, before Rob finally knocked his poor opponent out cold.

He sat on the stool beside her. ‘Long time no see. Does Tom know you’re here?’

‘Funnily enough, we don’t keep in touch.’ Grace shook her head. ‘After the mess he caused.’

‘He was gutted when he lost you.’

‘I doubt that very much. He’s probably scammed about ten women since Holly and me.’

‘I don’t think he was that bad, although he hasn’t shown his face here for years. I see him when I go to Newquay. So, what’s your situation?’

Grace felt uncomfortable with Rob, but she did not want him to know that. ‘I graduated from university and I’m living and working in London as a project manager in the charity sector.’

‘Good for you.’ He continued to smile at her as he nodded his head slowly, as if giving her his seal of approval.

‘So, are you still boxing?’ she asked.

‘I don’t fight no more, but the day job is the same as before. I still work at the dairy. But I’ve moved into management. It’s not as fancy a job as yours.’

Grace laughed. ‘Honestly, my job is a lot less glamorous than it sounds. I’m running around most of the time, or on the phone.’ She looked up to see Brendan appear behind the bar. He looked from her to Rob, then turned away to the coffee machine and made a drink. She guessed he would keep a wide berth from her now. It was clear they would not be friends.

‘Shall we sit at a table?’ she said to Rob, feeling the tension coming from Brendan.

Rob stood up and she followed him across the room as he was speaking. She looked back to see Brendan watching her. She was not concentrating on what Rob was saying.

‘So, is that a yes?’ Rob asked as they sat down.

She turned back to him. ‘Sorry?’

‘After this, do you want to come back to my place and watch the recording of my last fight?’

She gave a nervous laugh, which came out louder than she anticipated, she guessed it was mixed with nervous energy. ‘What now?’

‘Well, yeah,’ he slurred.

She shook her head. ‘I’ve had a long day and I’ve got an even longer one tomorrow.
