I loved having the family home for Christmas. Sam and Nico came home a few times a year, but Christmas was always my favorite.
This year, my grandsons were the center of attention. I loved watching them giggle and laugh, but it would be easier to tell the boys about Mateo once the kids were in bed. Conversation in general was easier when the kids were in bed.
But there was a small chance I was delaying the announcement. Why did telling the boys about Mateo make me nervous?
Nico sat down, about to consume his third slice of pie. âRemember that Christmas when Nacha almost set the curtains on fire?â
âI did not set them on fire.â
âI said almost.â
Sam shook his head. âI donât remember. What happened?â
âShe put the candle in the window then closed the curtains. Dad noticed before the curtains caught fire though.â Nico waved his fork. âI think sheâd seen that in a movie or something.â
âWhy are you picking on me?â Nacha rolled her eyes.
Sam grinned. âRemember that Christmas when we had two trees? Dad saw that fully decorated tree on sale for five dollars and brought it home on Christmas Eve.â
âIâd forgotten about that.â Nacha hugged a throw pillow to her chest. âHeâd have been on the floor constantly playing with these little guys.â
Nico nodded. âFor sure.â
âChristmas isnât the same with him gone,â Sam said.
âItâs not, is it?â I missed Jeffrey too, and the reminiscing only made me more nervous about introducing them to Mateo. I didnât want anyone to feel like I was forgetting Jeffrey.
Nico sent a car racing across the tile floor. âEvery year heâd get a fruitcake. Nobody else ate any of it.â
âHe loved his fruitcake.â The phone rang, and I may have been a bit too quick to grab it. âHello.â
âMerry Christmasâ Hank, my son-in-law, was like a third son. âI had a few quiet minutes and wanted to call. I know Iâll see you tomorrow, but . . .â
âIâm so glad youâre coming tomorrow. And if you have to stay late, come anyway. No matter what time you get off.â
âI will.â He never promised things idly.
âDo you want to talk to Nacha?â
Things between them were strained, but I knew that communicating would help them. I just knew it.
âNah, Iâll justââ
I sighed. As much as I tried not to interfere, disappointment was hard to hide. âOkay, well . . .â
Hank spoke up. âIâll talk to her for a minute.â
âGreat. Here she is.â I patted Nacha on the shoulder after handing over the phone.
She carried the phone outside to talk which suited me just fine. Private conversations were a good thing.
But she wasnât outside nearly long enough. Two minutes later, she sat down next to me.
âThe way you jumped for the phone, I wondered if it was your new boyfriend.â Nico chuckled.
I replayed his words in my head, making sure Iâd heard him correctly. My heart thumped, and I pressed a hand to my chest. Shock kept me silent much too long. âI was going to tell yâall after the little ones went to bed.
