Chapter Thirteen
By ten-fifteen things were quiet enough for me to slip a slice of cheese and a crispy rasher of bacon inside a biscuit. I pulled up a chair at Adele and Samuelâs table. Eva and Cole had left shortly after Evaâs encounter with Adele, and I was itching to find out what had gone on.
Samuel sat with his chair pushed back, turning the pages of the Brown County Democrat. Adele poked at her phone with her index finger but laid the device on the table as I sat.
âI sâpose you want to know what in heck old Eva was so het up about,â my aunt began in a soft voice.
âI do.â I matched her tone.
Samuel glanced over his readers at us and went straight back to his article. Iâd been acquainted with him long enough to know that he rarely butted into Adeleâs business or even asked about it.
âSeems Evaâs buying into the thought that I applied that there toxic substance to my own yarn. Thatâs why she and Brewster werenât knitting this morning. The only yarn they got is mine, and neither wants to touch it.â
I wrinkled my nose. âThatâs crazy, Adele.â I took a bite of my snack.
âSure it is. But what can you do? Thing is, the yarn Wanda and crew showed me wasnât the exact same green as I use. Sure, it had my label on the skein and all such like that. But that green was a bluer shade.â
âThatâs strange, isnât it?â I asked.
âI told em which end was up, so to speak, and one of those cops had the audacity to suggest my eyesightâs going. Why, Iâve been using that same shade of green dye for nigh on twenty years, Robbie. Youâd think Iâd know when my yarnâs been tampered with.â
âNothing wrong with my girlâs eyes, I can attest to that.â Samuel beamed at his âgirlâ of seventy-four.
I had to agree. But was it the toxin that made Adeleâs green yarn look more blue? It had to be.
âI told Eva I wadnât under arrest or nothing,â Adele continued. âI said the detective doesnât have a chicken-picking thing to charge me with. Eva didnât appear to care.â
âDid Wanda give you any sense of what the toxin was?â I asked. âThe one in the yarn Vicky was knitting with, I mean. How it got there?â
âShe suspects it was something agricultural or whatnot. They were still waiting on some lab results.â Adele shook her head. âItâs a frustration, Robbie. No two ways about it.â
I narrowed my eyes. âSomething agricultural.â Iâd learned about a lethal herbicide in California when I was out there and had explored whether it had been the cause of my momâs sudden death. âLike an herbicide or a pesticide?â
âMight could be.â Adele drained her coffee.
âSo, the question is, who has access to agricultural poisons and also wanted Vicky out of the way?â
âThat would be the question, all righty.â
I thought for a moment. âCole sells real estate. He could have found something lethal in a clientâs shed.
