CHAPTER TWELVE

“THEY SHOULD BE HOME soon, Gale. Go and apologize for whatever you did, because you’re not hiding your feelings well at all,” Cary said.

Gale did not know what to say to that. He was distressed. He had royally fucked up.

“Cedar’s something, isn’t she?” he asked. He looked at the organized files on the table. Apparently, the she-bear had come over here earlier to get some work done. She discussed some things with Weston, and then she proceeded to organize files. She digitized a bunch of it onto her laptop too, no doubt ready to send it off to Trinity at any moment. She worked amazingly fast.

“Yes, she’s certainly efficient,” Weston said. “She’s also nosy in an I-care-about-you kind of way. And she’s quite a beauty.”

Cary didn’t correct her mate, and Gale knew why. Weston said it for Gale. Because of Gale.

“What do you really think of her?” Gale asked.

“Exactly what I said. If you like her, catch her.”

Gale’s stomach twisted itself into knots. Oh, he did like her. More than he was comfortable with. Just over a day, she had managed to captivate him, and it was all because Trinity had assigned her to Eurio. There wasn’t an instant spark or anything like that, not for him. She and Ike hit it off right away, but if he hadn’t been forced to spend so much time with her, he would have promptly done his best to forget about her like he did anyone who showed a remote amount of interest in him—and Cedar was interested. But each passing moment he was forced to spend with her made her that much more intriguing. She carried herself with confidence, she had a sunny smile, and her fishing skills were ridiculous. She was nosy like Weston said but in the most genuine way possible.

He had acted hastily when traces of Solsis continued to buzz in his veins after his first encounter with it last night. He was sober now, and while he did not in any way regret having sex with Cedar, it happened too soon. He had way too much baggage, and he hurt her because of it.

“Thanks for your time,” Gale said.

“No problem.” Weston escorted him to the door. “You better listen to my mate. It’s better to apologize for anything you do wrong right away.” He frowned. “Do I even want to know what you did? Do you want to talk about it?”

“We’re old friends, Weston, but we’ve never talked.”

“Yeah, my mate gets real pissy about that sometimes.”

“Weston,” Cary chided from the hall.

Gale chuckled. “I fucked up, and now I have to make things right. That’s all there is to it.”

Weston nodded. “Good luck.”

The wolf shifter was over a decade older than Gale, but friendship wasn’t restricted by age. Weston felt like a brother in many ways. And yet he, like everyone else, often felt like a stranger these days. Gale didn’t know how to let people in anymore. He had good relationships, he had friends, but he was distant.
