The day just kept getting better. Not only was Connor joining her back to Galway, but heâd arranged a special ride back for them.
âYou mean we donât have to wait for the boat full of vomiting tourists?â sheâd asked him when he told her the news.
âWe can if you really want to.â He winced at the thought. âBut Patrick is making an errand run for some of the older folks on the island and he offered to bring us along.â
âI love the sound of that,â said Emma, smiling.
âIt will take a bit longer. Weâll make stops at the other two islands before we head back to the mainland.â
âReally? I was hoping Iâd get to see them, but that didnât seem super likely.â
âYep. Itâs one of Patrickâs many side jobs, shuttling things around from one island to the other and Galway to boot. Heâll be happy for the company, I think.â
A thought crossed Emmaâs mind that made her heart beat faster. âWait. Youâre not coming back with him, are you?â
âYou think I can get my Christmas shopping done that quickly? Jaysus, woman, youâve got more faith in my shopping abilities than I do. No, I thought Iâd stay with you. Maybe even until you fly out, if thatâs alright with you.â
âIt absolutely is,â she said. âItâs perfect.â
âPlus,â Connor continued. âI already convinced Patrick to man the pub for the next two nights. Iâm pretty sure heâs already sent out invites for karaoke night.â He shuddered at the thought. âI donât want to be back for that, and Iâm sure he doesnât want me to be, either. No need to deprive the young one of all his fun, now is there?â
Emma laughed. âWhat a good big brother you are. Now you just have to find the perfect Christmas gift for him, and youâll be winning all sorts of Best Sibling Ever awards.â
âThatâs not really a thing.â Connor was shaking his head. âYou only children never really get how the sibling dynamic works, do you?â
âHow could we? None of it makes sense. Youâre always taking the piss out of each other, punching each other on the arms, rubbing your knuckles on each otherâs scalpsâ¦â She noticed the way Connor was looking at her, and her expression turned quizzical. âWhat? What is it? What did I say?â
Connor put his hand over his heart and let his eyes well up with insincere emotion. âYou got the expression right. âTaking the piss out of each other.â I justâ¦I never thought Iâd see the day. Well done, truly.â
Emma shook her head, turning back to Connorâs bedroom to check one last time that she had everything packed. It wasnât like sheâd had a suitcase full of belongings, after all. She was, however, leaving the island one hurling sweatshirt richer, and as she tucked it into her backpack, she smiled at the thought.
