The day just kept getting better. Not only was Connor joining her back to Galway, but he’d arranged a special ride back for them.

“You mean we don’t have to wait for the boat full of vomiting tourists?” she’d asked him when he told her the news.

“We can if you really want to.” He winced at the thought. “But Patrick is making an errand run for some of the older folks on the island and he offered to bring us along.”

“I love the sound of that,” said Emma, smiling.

“It will take a bit longer. We’ll make stops at the other two islands before we head back to the mainland.”

“Really? I was hoping I’d get to see them, but that didn’t seem super likely.”

“Yep. It’s one of Patrick’s many side jobs, shuttling things around from one island to the other and Galway to boot. He’ll be happy for the company, I think.”

A thought crossed Emma’s mind that made her heart beat faster. “Wait. You’re not coming back with him, are you?”

“You think I can get my Christmas shopping done that quickly? Jaysus, woman, you’ve got more faith in my shopping abilities than I do. No, I thought I’d stay with you. Maybe even until you fly out, if that’s alright with you.”

“It absolutely is,” she said. “It’s perfect.”

“Plus,” Connor continued. “I already convinced Patrick to man the pub for the next two nights. I’m pretty sure he’s already sent out invites for karaoke night.” He shuddered at the thought. “I don’t want to be back for that, and I’m sure he doesn’t want me to be, either. No need to deprive the young one of all his fun, now is there?”

Emma laughed. “What a good big brother you are. Now you just have to find the perfect Christmas gift for him, and you’ll be winning all sorts of Best Sibling Ever awards.”

“That’s not really a thing.” Connor was shaking his head. “You only children never really get how the sibling dynamic works, do you?”

“How could we? None of it makes sense. You’re always taking the piss out of each other, punching each other on the arms, rubbing your knuckles on each other’s scalps…” She noticed the way Connor was looking at her, and her expression turned quizzical. “What? What is it? What did I say?”

Connor put his hand over his heart and let his eyes well up with insincere emotion. “You got the expression right. ‘Taking the piss out of each other.’ I just…I never thought I’d see the day. Well done, truly.”

Emma shook her head, turning back to Connor’s bedroom to check one last time that she had everything packed. It wasn’t like she’d had a suitcase full of belongings, after all. She was, however, leaving the island one hurling sweatshirt richer, and as she tucked it into her backpack, she smiled at the thought.
