For a while I was delirious, unaware of my surroundings; otherwise, I would have written sooner. That time is over. I am definitely on the mend. Don’t worry, Rosy. I am fit as a fiddle. Full of love for you and ours. There is even better news. With Paris regained, there is every reason to believe the war is coming to a close. Pray for that. I want to be home. Most of all, I want to look at you, to see your face and your wonderful hands. I want to look at the boys to see what I have missed and to see once again in each of them what I know so well. I want to stand on the back porch and look at the river finding its way. Macky, sorry that there was no book for your birthday; two next time. Okay? One day, you will have an entire wall of books. One day seems always to be in the future. Maybe that is as it should be.

From your mother’s letters, Colly, I know you’ve been UP to something. Have you sprouted wings? I bet not. Neither have I but it would be fun to fly.

I believe that next year we will have a Christmas that we have all been waiting for, with a tree standing tall in the window and lots of presents for everyone. Remember that life and loving can be its own reward.

Your husband and father.

There was not any discussion after the letter except a single comment from Colly.

“Next year I want a sled with red runners.”

All of the Guthries were relieved. Macky could see that his mother was at peace as she moved around the room, puffing the pillows on the couch, straightening a chair. She seemed stronger than ever. There was an additional determined air about her. It was though she had found her second wind.

“Into bed for you two. Colly can hardly keep his eyes from closing. No wonder, it’s an hour past your bedtime. I’ll see you in the morning. Good night.”

The boys climbed into bed as the moonlight poured into their room. Within a few minutes, Colly was sleeping soundly. As Macky looked at his brother, he thought about what his father had written.

Suddenly, Macky remembered the dollar bill from the lady in the fur hat. He jumped from his bed, opened the book, and there it was. Putting the book under his pillow, Macky knew quite clearly for what good use it should be used.

In her bedroom, Maryrose was wide awake. She had already offered her thankful prayers for the welcome news about her husband. She could tell from the tone of his letter that all the essentials were right with him. It was the Christmas gift she needed. She was happy.

She thought, now, that her energy had to be centered on the children’s Christmas. She was determined that it would not go unobserved in any of its meanings. Its truest meaning was always present in the Guthrie household.
