Chapter Seven

Lily gaped at Zach. Did he really think he could throw her brother’s words back in her face and get her to agree? On the other hand, he’d offered to show her some magic, and if he couldn’t do it, she’d be off the hook. At least with him. There’s no getting out of my promise to Linus. But she didn’t think Zach could truly show her anything she hadn’t seen before. Get busy living, Lily. Somehow it still looked bleak from where she sat.

“Okay, Zach. If you can show me the magic, you’ve got a deal.”

The smile he gave her lit corners of her heart she hadn’t seen in years and she found her lips quirking to match his before she tightened them.

“Excellent. Can I have your phone?” He shifted out from behind her, taking the delicious spicy scents with him. He crossed to the table where he turned off the stove and pulled her pack closer to him.

“My phone?”

“Yeah, I want to send a message to your ICE contacts and let them know you’re okay. You missed your check-in yesterday.” He dug through the top pocket of her pack, pulling out her headlamp, map, and lip balm.

“Ice?” She shook her head. “What are you talking about?”

“ICE. In Case of Emergency. Don’t you have those programmed into your phone?” He held up her little black cell.

“Uh, no, I guess not.” She grimaced. “I’ve never needed them.”

He raised an eyebrow, but didn’t refute her. “Who would you call first if you were ever in trouble?”

“My brother.” The truth hurt. She’d always gone to him for help, and until two years ago, he’d come running. Even now, at her most desperate, he’d shown up to tell her to pull her head out of her ass and let him go.

“Who did you call for the last two years?” Zach’s voice had turned soft.

I didn’t need anyone in the last two years. But maybe she had desperately needed help. She just hadn’t taken any. Who’d been there when her brother died? Who’d held her when the sorrow had kicked her ass?

“Felicity Coeur. My best friend.”

Zach shot her a funny look, but brushed her phone with his fingertips and tapped out a text message.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“I might be recovering from nearly freezing to death, but I’m not dense. What was that look for?”

Zach dropped her phone back into her pack and set his hands on his hips. The sweater stretched across his chest and lascivious pleasure zinged through her. While she’d seen plenty of guys with brown hair, broad shoulders, and startling eyes, something about Zach rekindled her feminine awareness and made her wish for more time in his arms.

What’s wrong with me? I don’t even know him.

“Do you want me to explain what I thought or show you the magic I promised?”

Something in his voice warned her to take the easy way out, but she’d never shied away from any challenge, especially when the challenge could end in death. She didn’t fear an ending, only the interminable bleakness life had become.
