Part of Ivy’s workday went into preparation for the party. This event mattered to her even more than serving customers and patrons and facilitating the occasional love story. She wouldn’t have to provide all of the food and drinks, but it seemed that every year more people squeezed into museum to share the experience—and all of them knew about the Magic Christmas Bakery and its famous treats.

Some stayed only for a short while, to be a part of it all. Others were there the whole time. Everyone contributed a little something, whether resident or visitor in Pinedale.

Each year, Ivy would host a couple of dinners the same week, because the leftovers would be far too much. By New Year’s Eve, most of the guests would be gone or celebrating in their own homes, and when she closed the bakery on that day, Ivy would take a day and a half for herself, to reflect, to make plans for the next year.

For the bakery and the business in general, of course. Ivy didn’t make any other plans.

She had brought a sandwich from home, anticipating that she wouldn’t have time to go out or sit with Natasha. She remembered that the latter had scheduled another interview with Marilyn, so she might not even come by. The thought filled her with disappointment that was gone the moment she saw Natasha sitting at what had become her usual table.

Ivy wasn’t fooling herself any longer. She loved seeing her every day, and not just because Natasha could help her career in many ways. Ivy loved to spend time with her, to listen to her…She suppressed a sigh. This was where it would end. Natasha had come far out of her comfort zone. She would go back to a home, job, and favorite way of spending her vacation that was very different from Ivy’s.

There was no way Ivy could let a whole year lapse, though she was curious what it would be like to spend Christmas on the beach. It was unlikely she’d find out within the next few years.

One of the bakers she had hired to help in the kitchen, called for her, and Ivy went back in. The next time she had a moment, Natasha was gone.

Was she really serious about helping setting up the Christmas tree? It had to be soon if Natasha wanted to go home early next week. And why was she hesitating? Did she really think Natasha was mad at her for some reason?

Lara was back, sitting at a table by the window. Ivy did a double-take and then smiled when she saw that she was not alone.

Ivy hadn’t seen the man with her before, but he looked at Lara as if she was the only person in the world.

Ivy could feel her eyes well up, which might have nothing to do with the fact that Christmas Cupid had struck again. She guessed there would be one more person at the party—if not the one she would have loved to see there.
