When it seemed as though the only thing that could keep Gran awake any longer would be if each of them took an eyelid and hooked it up so her eyes wouldn’t shut, Sebastian and Belle took a taxi back to Little Woodville.

‘She was the happiest I’ve seen her tonight,’ said Sebastian as the taxi pulled slowly into the village and down the high street.

Belle couldn’t stop smiling. ‘I can’t believe I’ve seen her. I’ll bet I wake up tomorrow and think I’ve dreamt it all.’

‘Straight on please,’ Sebastian told the driver. ‘We’re heading to the bed and breakfast first, then Snowdrop Cottage.’

Belle clocked the time. ‘It’s almost midnight.’

‘She could talk for England, your gran. We’re lucky nobody asked us to leave as we were there so late.’ His eyes dazzled as though he’d been just as mesmerised by their meeting tonight. The taxi pulled up outside the bed and breakfast. ‘Actually, I’ll get out here too. I could use the walk.’ Sebastian took out his wallet and only after a lot of insistence took some money from Belle to pay for her share of tonight’s fare.

When the taxi departed, they stood at the side of the road, in front of the gate separating the path leading up to the front door from the pavement.

‘Thank you for tonight, Sebastian.’

‘You’re welcome. I think I delivered your gran the best Christmas present she could ever wish for.’

‘I think you’re right.’ Her breath hovered white against the air, although bundled up in her coat and scarf she didn’t feel the cold on the clear winter’s night. ‘Is there something else?’ He didn’t seem in a hurry to go anywhere.

‘When I was with your gran, I noticed her wearing the locket.’

‘I sent it back to her.’ She wondered where this was going.

‘I know you did. The last time I visited I asked her if there was a photo inside and she opened it to show me that there was one of her and one of someone else. I realised who it was.’

‘Who?’

‘It’s my gran. She died a long time ago but she and Gillian were the best of friends, which is how I came to know your gran. I don’t know all the details, and I hope she’ll tell us more one day. But it got me thinking.’

‘In what way?’

He shrugged. It was his turn to breathe into the night air. Wrapped up in his donkey jacket, he turned and rested against the little fence as Belle did the same. ‘There’s obviously something I don’t know either, something that was kept from both of us.’

‘Blimey, I feel like I’m on one of those TV shows and I’m about to find out some deep, dark family secret.’

He didn’t see the funny side. ‘You don’t think…’

‘Don’t think what?’

‘I don’t know… you don’t think we’re somehow related or something, do you?’

Belle’s laughter echoed around them until she clamped a gloved hand across her mouth in case she woke the whole of Little Woodville. ‘I really don’t. How exactly would that be possible? Gran had Mum and that was it.
